Nope, These Aren’t Your Grandma’s Advent Calendars

If your house is anything like mine, the Christmas music clicked on just as you were clearing your Thanksgiving table. Confession: I’m a bit of a Christmas crazy, one of those people who would like lights on the house year-round and “Santa Baby” as my perpetual background noise. And while my husband tires of the soundtrack after about a week, my kids thankfully inherited my unabashed love for all things Christmas. Their little minds exploded with excitement when they got to pick out our tree this year, we’re all decked out in matching family jammies at night and we sing “Jingle Bells” on our daily drive to school. Yep, we’re that family.
But this is the first year my kids have wrapped their heads around what Christmas actually is—Read: Santa is coming, and he’s bringing them some loot. And they are waking up every day screaming, “Is it Christmas today?!” So as fast as my fingers could type, I ordered an advent calendar to give them some literal context as to how far away we are from the big day.
To my surprise, advent calendars aren’t what they once were—those paper boards where you peeled back tiny doors to reveal a microscopic drawing.
