With fall staring next week (September 22nd to be exact), it’s officially time to update your beauty game. This season is full of fun, atypical-for-fall looks—with nary a smoky eye in sight! Whether you swooned for Naomi’s sparkly lips, wondered how Gigi got that Fashion Week glow, or still find yourself speculating whether or not red lips are still a thing (they always are), there’s a color, look, or texture just for you.
1. Non-Touring
Buh bye contouring and strobing. Instead of concentrating on deepening the contours of your face for Kardashian-inspired impact, non-touring uses illuminating/highlighting products to play up the naked look (Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner are both fans). Use a product such as Perricone MD No Highlighter to highlight the areas of your face where light typically bounces off, including the cheekbones; also do the highlighter dotted above brows and down the center of the nose.
2. Classic Red Lips
From Taylor Swift’s signature pout to J.Lo’s crimson kisser, the classic scarlet lip is having a(nother) moment. It's perfect for the office or a night out, and easy to pair with a bare eye or cat’s eye liner. Want to keep your lip look locked? Apply Guerlain Kiss Kiss Lip Lift smoothing lip primer before color for a look that won’t budge or leak.
3. Shimmery Shadow
Besides oohing and aahing over Simone Biles’s gymnastic genius at the Olympics, it was hard to miss her glitter-dipped eyelids. Subtle or more over-the-top variations of the sparkly look popped up at Fashion Week at Victoria Beckham and Custo Barcelona among others. SOL’s Metallist combines a dual-ended eyeshadow with a superfine liquid foil shadow on one side and chunky glitter in a corresponding shade on the other, so you can decide just how much of a disco ball effect you want.
4. Peachy-Nude Blush
If you’re not quite ready for a completely bare face, take a page out of Duchess Kate or Beyonce’s beauty playbook and add a sheer pink flush to cheeks or lips on an otherwise nude or neutral face. Want to transition your summery pinks for fall? Go for dusty rose or taupey pink instead of cotton candy or petal shades.
5. Glitter Lips
Oh, admit it. Your inner four-year-old self squeed and nearly hyperventilated when you saw Naomi Campbell arrive at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. The easiest way possible to achieve her look? Coat lips in lip gloss and “kiss” some glitter or use a fine brush to paint on the glitter. Start with the center of your pout and work your way out.
6. Copper
Hopefully, you’re still enamored with all things rose gold, a trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. At a recent Tadashi Shoji show, a swipe of copper in the center of eyelids added impact and fall inspiration. The look was also all over the VMAs.
7. Goth Lips
Every fall brings with it a variation of a very deep lip look, this season’s version has undertones of black, navy blue or purple showed up on the Fall runways at Ohne Titel and on the street at NYFW. For added contrast to your deeply tinted pout, add a touch of highlighter just above the cupid’s bow.
8. Face Art
Justin Bieber has that teeny tiny face tattoo, but if permanent ink seems a bit extreme to you, add a temporary design instead. For upcoming holiday parties or even Halloween, a swirly bit of facial art makes an unexpected statement and lasts only as long as you want it to. Use waterproof liquid eyeliner and a stencil for a dummy-proof result.
9. Matte Makeup
One of the bigger trends this season is the return of matte makeup for lips, eyes and cheeks. But far from being unflattering and drying, the newest mattes are more like washes of color that simply don’t have either shine or sparkle. Stila Stay All Day MATTE’ificent Lipstick comes in 12 shades and seems to have figured out the perfect concentrated matte-pigment-to-oil ratio. Best yet, lips aren’t dried out after a few hours.
10. Monochrome and Two-Tone Manicures
After a few seasons of over-the-top nail art and embellishments galore, the fall nail is like an arty hybrid between 1960s pop art and a French manicure. Back in February, the runways at Jenny Packham featured a nearly nude nail with a gold star in the center. Tone-on-tone French manicures or neutral tones with a line of black or bright paint are an easy way to update your look each week.
