Goop's Beauty Director Reveals The Only Scent You Need This Winter
It smells like "the air inside an old church somewhere in Romania."
When you work at Goop, you have an army of beauty goods at your disposal. After all, not only does the lifestyle company constantly vet new products to recommend to its readers—only the best ones make the cut!—it also has its own, lauded line of skincare. And even though the team is steeped in product goodness, there's one bottle the staffers can't stop grabbing for. Spoiler alert: it's Goop's first scent, edition 01-winter 2016.
"I’ve heard it described most often as 'the forest' fragrance, and it does smell forest-y," Jean Godfrey-June, Goop's beauty director, told The Lookbook. "To me, it also smells like a lit fire, crackling, with the tiniest trail of sexy smokiness. And maybe the air inside an old church somewhere in Romania."
But the scent's cozy, wintry quality doesn't make it out of place in sunny Santa Monica, where Goop is headquartered. "Gwyneth Paltrow [is] always spritzing it on," Jean revealed. "She’ll be wearing linen shorts and a crisp summer button-down, and she’ll pair it with edition 01 winter. Somehow it all works!"
As a company, Goop famously advocates for a healthy lifestyle, and staffers carried that philosophy with them when developing a scent. "It’s extremely difficult to find transparent fragrances, meaning those that break out what ingredients are actually in them," Jean said. "The word 'fragrance' has become something of a Trojan horse for ingredients cosmetics companies don’t want you to know are in their formulas, [such as] potential carcinogens, known endocrine disrupts—stuff you would not spray on your skin if you knew it was there. Fragrance, such a beautiful part of life, is being turned into this decidedly un-beautiful delivery system for industrial chemicals."
Goop partnered with perfumer Douglas Little on edition 01 winter because "he’s got amazing experience in creating transparent, clean fragrances—a craft he learned after creating many gorgeous conventional fragrances over the years," Jean explained. Douglas also has his own line of perfumes called Heretic, which launched at Barneys in 2015. "It's amazing," Jean said. "My favorite is a basil-geranium-mint one called Amulet, but all eight are incredible."
As you may have guessed from the name, Goop's fragrance is seasonal, and another edition will launch next season. Any hint as to what it will smell like? "Mmm…look for it in the spring!," Jean teased. But, she did leave a beauty tip to carry us through until the frost thaws.
"This minute I’m obsessed with Vetiver & Fleur cream from a new, clean, transparent brand called Sangre de Fruta," Jean told us. "It’s subtle and so beautiful, and the texture of the cream is fantastically delicate. Heaven!"
