Meryl Streep and Karl Lagerfeld Have Nothing On These Bitter Fashion Feuds

When designer Karl Lagerfeld accused Meryl Streep of "cheapness" for deciding not to wear a Chanel dress he was designing for her to wear at the Academy Awards and implied that she was accepting money to wear something else, he ignited fashion's latest catty feud.

Meryl's reps denied that she ever accepts compensation from designers, and Karl later issued a quasi-retraction that said he "regretted the controversy." Still, the incident will forever live in a hall of imfamy, alongside these recent fashion flaps:

Red-soled shoes are forever associated with designer Christian Louboutin, who trademarked the idea in 2008 and sued Yves Saint Laurent for selling red pumps with red soles three years later. The 18-month odyssey of claims and counterclaims finally ended in October 2012, when YSL (which by then had been permitted to continue producing the shoes) dropped its counterclaims and both designers claimed victory. It was much ado about a bottom of a shoe.

Anna Wintour and Kim Kardashian are so seemingly tight these days, it's hard to remember that just five years ago, Vogue's editor-in-chief was accused of having the reality star barred from the Met Gala. Nowadays as they sit together at fashion shows, they strike a pose—there's nothing to it, Vogue.

Kanye West's Yeezy shoes have been a win for Adidas (which makes them), but his first choice was Nike. When that didn't end up happening as planned, Kanye went on a media tour of disrespect and eventually released a Nike diss song called "Facts" with some pretty pointed lyrics: "Nike out here bad, they can't give s*** away."

Steve Madden is best known for designing shoes, but the company has also created handbags like the BTotally, which Stella McCartney found too close to her Falabella bag; both have silver chains and similar shapes. In 2015, McCartney sued for "trade dress infringement, unfair competition, deceptive trade practices, trade dress dilution, and design patent infringement." The lawsuits continued for Steve Madden, which was also sued by Aquazzura for copying shoe designs in 2016.

Yet another heated footwear feud found Nicki Minaj sending a flurry of angry Tweets accusing shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti of "racism and disrespect" for not working on a collection with her after she'd shouted out his shoes in several songs and reportedly inspired a sneaker line called Nicki. The brand has yet to respond and it's probably too late to hope that they'll collaborate, but how amazing would those shoes be? The real victims of these fashion feuds are us.
