We're Deeply Disturbed By These 2016 Fashion and Beauty Trends

2017 can't come soon enough.

By Adele Chapin

Chokers. Bodysuits. Velvet for all seasons. More chokers. You already know the trends that were the most ubiquitous this year. There are some trends, however, that truly stretched the bounds of good taste. Here are seven of the most irksome, most disturbing, or most downright kooky fashion and beauty trends of 2016.

Furry Nails

This is as creepy as it sounds. New York City brand Libertine sent models down the runway for Fall 2016 with little clumps of fake fur glued to their nails. Never thought we’d say this, but let’s leave the fur trend to Gucci loafers, why don’t we?

Succulent Nails

Another 3D-nail trend this past year is “succulent nails,” also known as wearing houseplants on your fingers. Maybe this is a good lead-in to Pantone’s color of 2017, “greenery.” That still doesn't mean we'll try it.

Fur Pompom Baseball Caps

Fur—faux and otherwise—really was everywhere in 2016, and for some reason we noticed tons of people wearing these furry baseball caps. (Like most trends, it can apparently be traced back to Rihanna.) The caps are cute, but it might make more sense on a knit hat. And maybe in 10 years when we look back at these photos, we’ll wonder why we walked around with giant fuzzy pompoms on our heads. We'd hate to do that to ourselves.

Excessively Ripped Jeans

Arrivederci Milano! 💥💥 So much to be grateful for. xx

It sounds so “mom” to be complaining about ripped-up denim, but some pairs are more rips than jean. We’re talking bedraggled denim that exposes your entire thigh instead of just your knee. Example: repeat offender, Gigi Hadid. Though, to be fair, she may be the single (super)human who can pull it off.

Stupidly Expensive Sweatshirts

This year started out with news that an $800 hoodie from Parisian brand Vetements was sold out absolutely everywhere. We know that the fashion world is obsessed with the whole Vetements craze, but charging nearly a grand for a sweatshirt could be considered tacky, especially when it’s directly inspired by the Champion sweats we wore for high-school gym class.

Extra Long Sleeves

Speaking of Vetements, that label’s wacked-out proportions inspired all sorts of designers to churn out sweaters and dresses with way too-long sleeves — as in, knee-grazing sleeves. This just doesn’t seem practical for driving a car, brushing your teeth, cooking spaghetti, or basically living life.

Cindy Brady Hair

Brady Bunch hairstyles trending in 2016? The hair experts over at Mane Addicts noticed that a bunch of sexy editorials are featuring twisted, high pigtails that seem a tad bit Lolita. We tend to agree with an Instagram commenter who writes: “No thank you. Nobody over age 10 should do this ever unless it's Halloween.”
