Kat: I Had Brenda's Back

Kat reflects on the trip that could have been...

By Kat Odell

Santa Ynez could have been great. Could have been. Our trip to the organic farm (I have some photos posted on Instagram) was fantastic, and I loved picking all the fresh fruit and veggies. Even collecting fresh eggs. I have this dream one day to have a farm and source all my food off my own property. When I was growing up, my parents always had a fruit and vegetable garden, so visiting farms always has a nostalgia factor for me and brings me back to age eight.

Many people don't know that I was a vegetarian for seven years, from high school through half of college. I did it out of my love for animals, but toward the end of college I realized that to pursue a writing career in food, I really had to eat meat. And so I do. I eat everything. But I still do love animals, and I had mixed emotions visiting the cattle ranch. However, I do have to say, the meat we prepared that night was possibly the most delicious, flavorful, and beautifully-marbled meat I've ever tried. And that includes countless Kobe and Wagyu steaks consumed over the years.

Perhaps it was the wine at Sunstone Winery, but as soon as we got back to our house, Lindsay and Brenda got into a squabble. Naturally, as Brenda's friend, I had her back.
