Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have been going strong as one of Hollywood's most adorable couples since 2014. But until recently, the actors were notoriously private about their relationship. That is, until Dax Sheperd got a hold of Kunis. The former Punk'd actor sat down with his buddy Ashton's wife for his podcast, Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, and got Kunis to spill the tea on her relationship with Kutcher. Here's the story:
After working together as mere teens on That '70s Show (which, fun fact: Kunis has never watched!) the friends didn't meet again till a decade later. At that point, sparks began to fly ... but not as quickly as you'd think.
After he'd reconnected with Kunis, Kutcher invited her over to his house to meet his friend, an eligible suitor that he was hoping to hook Kunis up with. Wouldn't you know, the mystery dude never showed — so Kutcher and Kunis hooked up instead. (Was there really a blind date prospect? Guess we'll never know ... But would anyone ever stand up Kunis?)
After the unexpected tryst, Kunis spent the night at Kutcher's house. "I'll tell you this: while I was single I never spent the night at another guy's house," Kunis notes. "This was the first time that I spent the night at the guy's house."
When the two started dating, she said, "We were crazy neurotic about keeping it a secret, probably to a massive fault where we alienated so many friends, I'm sure." There was good reason for keeping things under the radar, though.
"[Ashton] was coming off of a divorce—post, post, post way post divorce," she said. "But I think there was a lot of misconceptions about the divorce. And because he's very private and respectful he wasn't going to go and say anything. So, he kind of just let rumors be rumors. And so people believed rumors …. He ate it. So people had a weird perception of who he was based on rumors that he didn't correct."
And of course, Kunis had her own past-relationship baggage to deal with. The actress had dated Macaulay Culkin for eight years, and now says of the relationship: "I f-cked up. Like, I was an assh-le in my 20s, and I'll be the first to admit it. That kind of is something that took me a long time to come out and be like 'Yeah, you know what? I was a dick, and I accept it and I own it now,'... It's f-cked up what I did and it's f-cked up how I did it."
Ah, well, all's well that ends well, and it seems that the former '70s Show actors have settled into something real. Still, when they finally came clean about their relationship, some people (ahem) were rather surprised. "I told my mom I was seeing him. We were driving up Laurel Canyon, and I was like, ‘Mom I have to tell you I’m dating somebody. And she was like, ‘Oh tell me! Who are you dating?’ And I was like,‘You’ve got to brace yourself for this one … I’m dating Ashton Kutcher. And she literally was like, ‘Shut the f—k up’ in Russian. I was like, ‘No I’m serious. I also may be in love with him so … There were so many thoughts that she couldn’t process. … There’s so many versions of his life that people thought he was that he wasn’t.”
