Andy Cohen Welcomes a Son via Surrogate: "I'm in Love"
The Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen host is officially a dad weeks after announcing the big news.
Andy Cohen is officially a dad — which we have to say definitely warrants a major Mazel! The Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen host welcomed his first child, son Benjamin Allen Cohen, via surrogate on Monday, February 4 at 6:35 p.m. PT.
Andy announced the happy news on Instagram Monday, along with a photo of the new dad holding his newborn son. Benjamin was born 9 pounds, 2 ounces, and 20 inches. "WOW!" Andy gushed in the Instagram post. "I’m in love. And speechless. And eternally grateful to an incredible surrogate. And I’m a dad. Wow."
The WWHL host also shared that his son is named after his grandfather, Ben Allen.
Andy first confirmed the news back in December on WWHL, sharing with the audience why he felt that was the right moment to reveal his plans to become a dad. "I've always tried to be as transparent as possible about my life. I overshare and I expect everyone around me to do the same and tonight I want you to be the first to know that after many years of careful deliberation, fair amount of prayers and the benefit of science, if all goes according to plan, in about six weeks time, I'm going to become a father thanks to a wonderful surrogate who is carrying my future," he shared. "Family means everything to me and having one of my own is something I've wanted in my heart for my entire life and while it has taken me longer than most to get there, I cannot wait for what I envision will be my most rewarding chapter yet."
He later confirmed the gender of his baby while hosting CNN's New Year's Eve coverage with Anderson Cooper: “It’s a boy and I got to tell you something, I cannot wait to meet this boy.”
He continued during the broadcast: "When I was growing up and when we were growing up … I just never thought it would be possible as a gay man to grow up and have a family. And then here we are in 2018, almost [2019], and anything’s possible. And I’m so grateful to a wonderful surrogate that I’m working with," he shared. "By the way, by the time it became possible, I was kind of having too much fun in my life to say, ‘I don’t think I can do this right now.’ But here I am, I turned 50 this year. It takes some people longer to get to that place. And it took me that time.”
He — and his beloved pup, Wacha — were also prepping to bring the baby home, as he confessed on-air on New Year's Eve. "I have all the gear. I'm getting the gear," he said. "Everyone's given me wonderful advice. I have a lot of great women in my life."
