The GLAAD Media Awards took place in Los Angeles on April 12 and drew a celeb-filled guest list as always. The event doles out awards to public figures who have been fair, accurate, and inclusive in representing the LGBT community — and Britney Spears was at the top of this year's list.

The "Toxic" singer took home the evening's Vanguard Award and was met with a standing ovation when she appeared onstage after a warm introduction from Ricky Martin.

In her speech, the pop star chatted about the way that society "puts an emphasis on what's normal," and treats other things as "strange." She concluded, to cheers: "To be able to express yourself as an individual through art is such a blessing."

Reportedly, a few things went awry after the singer left the stage. Audience members seemed restless, and the teleprompter broke down. The snafus caused host Wanda Sykes to joke: "Britney has broken the show."

Spears wasn't the only beloved pop diva to appear at the event. Shutterbugs snapped away as Erika Girardi walked the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills dance diva wore a sleek black dress and golden hoop earrings, and let her straight blonde locks hang down her back in a smooth curtain.
