Candiace Dillard Bassett Addresses Using Autotune After Comments She Made About Ashley Darby

Candiace Dillard Bassett and Ashley Darby may not always see eye to eye, but these two Real Housewives of Potomac cast members have something in common. They both love to perform. However, sometimes how they choose to express themselves in song has caused some drama between them. 

Like, for instance, at the RHOP Season 5 reunion when Candiace shared some shady comments about Ashley's use of autotune on her song "Coffee & Love." It's a moment that you can relive in the clip, above. Cut to 2021, and just recently Candiace released the track, "Drive Back," which does include the use of autotune.

When Candiace appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Sunday (July 25), one fan asked, "Were any apologies made to Ashley after the reunion about her using autotune, because at certain points in the song ['Drive Back'] autotune is very clearly used? It's still a bop, though."

Andy Cohen then followed up and asked if she owed Ashley an apology since "you did shade her autotune."

Here's what Candiace had to say about it. "I don't. I'll tell you why. So autotune is, people don't know, it's an industry standard. Everybody uses it from, like, the best singers to the ones that need a little prayer," Candiace said. "Some just need it more than others."

After a pause, Andy noted, "you both used it," for which Candiace had more of an explanation. "People use it in a creative way," she said. "Like T-Pain. Have you ever heard T-Pain sing? T-Pain is an amazing vocalist, but he used it in a creative way to get onto the stage. She used it on the entire song."

Candiace released the music video for "Drive Back" earlier this month, and it includes some fun cameos for RHOP fans. Robyn Dixon, Dr. Wendy Osefo, Gizelle Bryant, Karen Huger, and new cast member Mia Thornton all pop up in the video.
