Julia Lemigova and Martina Navratilova's adoption journey
Julia, who has daughters Emma and Victoria from prior relationships, spoke about her desire to adopt on RHOM Season 5.
"Martina and I are going to do our best to try to — oh my god, I'm having chills," she said on RHOM Season 5, Episode 13. "We're going to adopt a baby. If tomorrow they (the adoption agency) called me to say there was a little boy who needs a home, I mean, I would just collapse on the floor and die."
However, after filming on the regular season wrapped, Martina was diagnosed with Stage 1 throat cancer and early stage breast cancer. As such, Julia revealed during the Season 5 reunion that they had decided to put their adoption plans on hold so they could focus on Martina's health.
"When you're adopting a child, it has to be about the child," Julia explained to the cast and to host Andy Cohen on Part 2 of the Season 5 reunion. "And, right now, it's everything about Martina, and for her [to be] getting healthy."
"So, we're putting it on hold," she added. "You know, we were thinking [that at] any moment, the agency would call and give us happy news that we're going to have a baby... Instead, we are fighting two cancers. Like one was not enough."
On Season 6, viewers saw Martina as she navigated chemotherapy, and, ultimately, the moment when she finished her treatments.
Julia learned how to sing opera in celebration of Martina's journey, and she ultimately performed for the retired athlete once her treatments had concluded.
After Martina's health was back to a good place, Julia confirmed that the pair had decided to move forward with their adoption plans. “I hope that we will soon expand our family,” she told Page Six in December 2023. “Our adoption plans were on hold, but we’re still not closing the door on those plans.”
It looks like the door to those plans did open!
