Riley Burruss Created "a Movement" to Raise Awareness of Racial Injustice With Her Friends
RHOA's Kandi Burruss opened up about her daughter's reaction to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Kandi Burruss is a proud mom who is currently navigating some difficult conversations about race. The Real Housewives of Atlanta mom became emotional when addressing having to talk to her 4-year-old son, Ace, about police brutality during the Thursday (June 10) of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
However, Kandi is also a mom to a teen daughter, Riley Burruss, who is finding ways to get and her peers to support the Black Lives Matter movement, as Kandi also noted on WWHL: "Obviously I'm getting it from all different ages. We have Riley and Kaela who are on the older side of things. With Riley, she's very opinionated."
Kandi then detailed just how Riley has used her voice to create a "movement" with her friends.
Kandi explained: "And from the jump, she was like, she goes to a school that obviously the minority is black [and] the majority is white. But, she was like 'OK, I am unfollowing every single friend or person that is non-Black who's not speaking up about this, who's not showing that they are an ally with our community.' She's like 'It's one thing for them say 'Oh, we're friends. Oh, we're cool.' But if I don't see some type of something that they're recognizing whats happening right now, I'm unfollowing them.'"
Kandi noted that Riley, who has previously expressed an interest in pursuing a career in law and will begin her freshman year at NYU this fall, followed through on that promise: "And, she seriously did. She made it like a movement through her whole friend group. If she did not see some type of statement or show that you care, she was unfollowing you -- and she was serious about it."
Together, Kandi and Todd Tucker are parents to Ace and 1-year-old Blaze. They each also have a child from previous relationships: Kandi is mom to Riley; Todd is dad to Kaela.
Earlier this week, Kandi also appeared on the Instagram Live panel, Amplify Our Voices: An Open Dialogue on Being Black in America in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
