Kim Richards Reflects on How Her Arrest Affected Her Kids: "I've Made Mistakes, But I Keep Trying"

By Jocelyn Vena

Kim Richards is focusing on the future after a difficult year. Last April, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum was arrested for public intoxication, trespassing, resisting an officer, and battery on a police officer after an incident at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Shortly after the arrest, Kim entered rehab — twice — and since then, she says she's maintaining her sobriety for her kids. "I felt terrible for my children," Kim told People of her April arrest. "That was the thing that bothered me most. I cried because I hurt my kids."

How to Watch

Watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills on Peacock and the Bravo App.

After struggling with alcoholism for the majority of her adult life, she's now dealing with the effect it's had on her children on the Lifetime reality series, The Mother/Daughter Experiment, alongside her 20-year-old daughter Kimberly. Both Kim and Kimberly are committed to working on their relationship issues, but as the mother of four noted to People, it's been difficult to watch her kids see her struggle over the years. "Sometimes I put my arms around them and I say, 'I love you, I'm so sorry,'" she explained. "I know they worried about me."

In addition to her public battle with addiction, Kim also struggled watching her ex-husband, Monty Brinson, battle lung cancer. Their daughter, Brooke, credits her father's January 2016 death with helping Kim get better. "I'm glad it happened when it did," Brooke said. "It got her strong for [my father, Monty] did pass away. Maybe if it hadn't happened, things would have gotten really bad. But she went through rehab and she got stronger than ever."

Now, Kim is takings things one day at a time. "There are no guarantees," Kim said. "I've made mistakes, but I keep trying. I've never done anything intentionally to hurt my children. And I hope, for their sake and for the sake of one day my beautiful grandchildren who will come, that this is it."
