Lia Dias and Dr. Kendra Segura Explain Black Lives Matter's Ties to the LGBTQ+ Community
"The fight for Black Lives Matter is a fight for everyone," said Married to Medicine Los Angeles cast member Dr. Kendra Segura.
As people across the world march in support of Black Lives Matter, activists are continuing to highlight the historical connection between the Black and LGBTQ+ rights movements. Married to Medicine Los Angeles cast members Lia Dias and Dr. Kendra Segura spoke to BravoTV.com to discuss why the Black Lives Matter movement inherently includes LGBTQ+ issues, as well.
“The fight for Black Lives Matter is a fight for everyone. Because it’s about humanity. And it’s about equality,” said Dr. Kendra. “So when we say Black Lives Matter, really what we’re saying is that hey, everyone who is a human being, we all matter. That goes without saying.”
“It takes all of us to participate to fight for equal rights. It doesn’t matter what color you are. It doesn’t matter your sexual orientation. It’s a humanity issue,” she continued.
Lia explained that as a mother, she feels it is her job to educate her children to be accepting of others, in hopes that they, too will pass this thinking on to their peers.
“How can a race of Black people want to or think that it doesn’t include all? It does include all. It includes Black men, it includes Black women, it includes Black children, it includes the trans community, it includes the gay community. No one is excluded from this,” she said. “If one doesn’t have the freedom and liberties, why would anybody else expect that they would have it too? I’m raising my kids to understand that in this house we don’t talk about who we’re against. We love everyone.”
