Lisa Vanderpump Helps Organize the Most Adorable Surprise Proposal Ever
The new Peacock original series Vanderpump Dogs kicks off with an unforgettable pet adoption.
One potential dog adopter came into Lisa Vanderpump's West Hollywood rescue center hoping to add a new furry friend to his family — and a wife.
In the first episode of Vanderpump Dogs, now streaming only on Peacock, we meet Shannon and Matt, a psychology student and actor, respectively, looking to add a new pup to their "cuddle puddle," which already includes two dogs and four cats.
Lisa introduced the couple to three potential dogs and let them get to know each in the rescue center, as well as outside on the rooftop play area. "It's so important for potential adopters to really interact with the dogs," Lisa shared about matching people and pets at Vanderpump Dogs. "It's like a dating process: You want to have a little foreplay before you go all the way."
Shannon and Matt know a thing or two about dating with a courtship of a little more than two years. While Shannon was on the roof getting to know one of their potential canine matches, Matt revealed to Lisa, in private, his intention to start a new chapter with his girlfriend. "Yes, I am thinking if we find our forever fur baby here, that would be a great opportunity to propose to Shannon," Matt said.
Lisa was totally into this idea. "Maybe in a day or two if you really think about it, we could surprise you with a dog or whatever works," she told Matt. "This is really exciting."
When Shannon returned, she and Matt agreed that Larry, a 1-year-old terrier mix rescued from a kill shelter, would be the right dog for them. "I loved him so much immediately, and I want him to love me back," Shannon gushed.
Lisa explained that Shannon and Matt would need to first fill out an application and send a home video before they could officially adopt Larry. "Once somebody's chosen a dog, we have to do a home check, they have to fill in the application. We have to be sure that this is the best option for the dog," Lisa explained. "But I'm actually thrilled to be part of their engagement. It's like a match made in Heaven."
Later, we find out that the couple's application was approved, so Lisa and Vanderpump Dogs' trainer, Madeline Quint, bring Larry, who has an engagement ring on his collar, to help Matt surprise Shannon while they are out walking their other dogs at the park. "I'm so excited because I am planning to propose to Shannon today," Matt said in the episode. "Shannon is a destroyer of systems. I cannot get anything by her. If there's something hidden, she will figure it out. I am losing my mind."
Lisa said that she knows Shannon and Matt will be the perfect home for Larry. "Larry, he needs this kind of home where it's secure and there's love in abundance," she said. "For him to be the engagement dog, I couldn't have asked for anything better."
After Lisa told them they had been approved and Larry was going to be their dog, Shannon went to hold their new pooch and discovered a ring on his collar. "So Larry and I have both decided that you are my and his forever home," Matt said before he got down on one knee and proposed to Shannon. "Shannon, you are my best friend, and you are the most compassionate, brilliant, amazing, wonderful person I've ever met. You are proof magic exists. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?"
And she said yes! "This was very impressive on a lot of levels. I could never have dreamed anything like that. Just surreal," Shannon later said of the proposal before telling Matt, "You nailed it. It was perfect. Thank you."
Lisa couldn't have been happier to have been a part of Shannon and Matt's special moment. "This is a storybook ending. It doesn't happen all the time, but if we can accomplish something like that," she shared. "That is why we're here."
An update at the end of the episode revealed: "Larry is rehearsing for his ring-bearer duties at Matt and Shannon's wedding. He's making lots of friends. And he's in love with his new cuddle puddle."
