Mariah Carey's Former Choreographer Is Basically Like "I Don't Know Her" About the Diva's Current Stage Antics
The singer's dance coach of four years boldly critiques her current performances.
Anthony Burrell worked as Mariah Carey's choreographer for four years, but was let go after her disastrous New Year's Eve performance in Times Square. Now, he is lashing out with scathing critiques of her current performances, which have been a topic of conversation on social media and YouTube videos, such as this one comparing recent shows to ones from years ago.
"It's just typical Mariah," Burrell told Complex. "Mariah is clear: when she doesn’t wanna do something, she doesn’t do it. She’s performing with lackluster and no f**** given, and it’s taking away her star."
He admitted that, when he worked with her, he didn't try to overwhelm her with complicated steps and moves. "I wanted to give Mariah a modern push to revamp her, give her a fresher, more modern feel, make her more aware of her body and her lines, and not look like her feet hurt when she’s walking," he said.
Anthony, who has also worked with Beyoncé and is presently teaching a summer intensive dance class in Los Angeles, isn't holding back, blaming Carey's entourage as much as her.
"You're a legend," he admitted. "But you don’t care, your team doesn’t care. They’re not guiding and directing her. She’s back to where she was before. It's not like she's never looked this bad before; I just stepped her game up."
Perhaps Anthony could air out all his grievances via a dance-off with Carey's on-again, off-again, on-again dancer love Bryan Tanaka?
