Nene Leakes and Gregg Leakes Offered an Update on Their Troubled Marriage: "Our Relationship Is Not Great"
The RHOA 'Wife reveals the status of her 20-plus-year relationship amid Gregg Leakes' battle with cancer.
In the midst of dealing with a cancer diagnosis, Nene Leakes and Gregg Leakes have also been faced with other emotional issues in the form of marital woes. During Part 2 of The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 11 reunion, the longtime couple addressed the many problems viewers watched them try to deal with this season — including what the fate of their marriage may be in the future.
Nene confirmed during the reunion that she and Gregg were still not sleeping in the same room. "Our relationship is not great; it really put a strain on us. We decided to do counseling [with Dr. Jeff]," Nene shared. "Yes, it was Gregg's choice. Dr. Jeff was never my favorite person."
Nene and Gregg went to counseling with Dr. Jeff in Season 7 of RHOA. The couple were married from 1997 to 2011; they remarried in 2013 after briefly divorcing. She revealed this season that he had cheated on her in the past. And even before Gregg's cancer diagnosis last year, Nene noted that they had been having relationship issues.
She shared that "it would be easier to make a decision, yes" if Gregg wasn't currently facing cancer but added that a separation could still be something in their future even if that wasn't the case.
Gregg also appeared on the reunion couch, and offered an update on how he is currently doing in his cancer journey. After the reunion was filmed, Gregg confirmed he had completed six months of chemo. But at the time of the reunion, he shared, "I'm a couple treatments away from radiation, then I go through a full battery of testing again to see if the cancer has in fact incubated and started to spread — and we're hoping it hasn't."
Both Nene and Gregg revealed that the word "grouchy" is not something she can use to describe her husband, and Gregg even noted that he isn't always easy to live with. "I was difficult at times [even before]; I'm not a poster child for calmness," he said.
Still, Gregg noted he was hopeful he and Nene will make it through their issues and save their marriage. But, he noted, "The reward might be that we are not husband and wife at the end; the reward might be that we are the best of friends at the end."
As for Nene, she shared, "I can't tell you anything that I'm going to do. I feel like I have been pushed up against a wall... we'll just have to see."
Though, she made this clear: "It's tough... We are family, period, whether we are together or not. We share a 20-year-old son. I'm always going to be here for Gregg."
The RHOA reunion concludes Sunday at 8/7c. Check out a preview for Part 3, below.
