The World's Most Beautiful Woman Plans on Rubbing the Honor in George Clooney's Face
Find out who landed the coveted spot on PEOPLE's cover.
Many gorgeous women have graced the cover of PEOPLE's World's Most Beautiful issue since its debut in 1990. We mean, the likes of Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, and Angelina Jolie have landed the illustrious top spot over the years. However, there's one woman who has reigned supreme, earning a record fifth World's Most Beautiful title in this year's issue.
And that beauty would be Julia Roberts, who was named PEOPLE's World's Most Beautiful Woman 2017, the magazine announced Wednesday. The Oscar winner previously secured the World's Most Beautiful cover in 1991, 2000, 2005, and 2010.
Earning PEOPLE's World's Most Beautiful Woman title this year certainly underscores the fact that most of us are mere mortals compared to Julia, but she's also one-upped her pal and fellow Hollywood A-lister, George Clooney, who has only been named the virtual male equivalent title, PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive, twice. “I’m going to mention that in my Christmas card to the Clooneys this year,” Julia joked to PEOPLE.
Julia first appeared on the cover of PEOPLE's World's Most Beautiful issue at the age of 23 in 1991, the year after her star-making role in Pretty Woman. But Julia revealed to the magazine that she had no idea that the romantic comedy was a success when it first hit theaters. “I was in another movie in this tiny little town that was showing Star Wars in its first run," she said. "I remember reading … ‘Pretty Woman came out this weekend and made this much money,’ and I thought, ‘Is that a lot of money? Is that good? Is that great?’ I didn’t really know.”
In addition to Julia, this year's World's Most Beautiful issue, which hits newsstands Friday, is packed with lovely ladies including Oprah Winfrey, Carrie Underwood, Mandy Moore, Viola Davis, Emma Watson, Taraji P. Henson, and Chrissy Metz. PEOPLE previously revealed that our very own Eileen Davidson and Padma Lakshmi are also included in the roundup of "Beauties at Every Age."
