The stakes are always high on Last Chance Kitchen, where all star chefs are facing off for a chance to return to compete for the title of Top Chef. But the challenge following the April 16 episode of Bravo’s Top Chef is perhaps the most intense one yet, because the chefs were required to cook alongside host Tom Colicchio.
After being eliminated for cooking a “sunny lemon ginger love” dish that Tom said “had to be strained” and included some overcooked steak, Jennifer Carroll received a chance to redeem herself on Last Chance Kitchen. In order to get through to the next round, Jennifer would have to defeat last week’s champion, Lisa Fernandes.
“I’m definitely playing hard this time around,” said Jennifer. “I’m from Philly, so I’m like, the Rocky of Top Chef. Rocky keeps coming back. He keeps fighting. I get knocked down and I just keep coming back in.”
To prove themselves, Jennifer and Lisa had to create a delicious sauce.
“This is gonna be a sauce-off,” explained Tom. “So you can focus on your sauce...I’ll cook the protein.” As if this wasn’t challenging enough, Tom also mentioned that this week’s Last Chance Kitchen would have a very tricky time limit: “There’s no time on the clock, because your sauce must be ready when I’m done cooking.”
Lisa worked her magic to create a maggi chimichurri sauce, while Jennifer whipped up a beef sauce with harissa lemon ginger garlic and date au jus to serve over the bone-in ribeye Tom cooked.

“Next week, we’re doing things a little differently,” he said. “The winner of Last Chance Kitchen returns to the competition. You’ll get to battle against another chef next week.”
