Will Josh Altman's Daughter Join the Family Real Estate Business?
The #MDLLA agent opens up about working with his wife and brother — and if a next generation will join them.
For Josh Altman, real estate runs in the family. Not only is he one of L.A.'s fiercest agents but his brother, Matt, and his wife, Heather Bilyeu Altman, also work as agents together at Josh and Matt's firm. And the Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles agent admits that "working with family in business is work in itself."
Still he credits his older brother for offering balance to his own business style. "My brother taught me everything I know in this business, he's my mentor. He brought me up in this business and we're partners 50/50 on everything," he told the Daily Dish. "And what's best about us is our styles are totally different. So we can do good cop/bad cop on any listing or any negotiation. A lot of times people who like me don't like him as much, or like him a lot and they don't like me. So it's always good to have a partner in crime that you can trust and know that's going to represent the name as much as you do."
And then there's Heather — working with his wife, who is expecting the couple's first child, is all about finding time for both love and deals. "Having my wife work with us... I mean it literally could be another reality show," he said. "We started having date nights once a week where we shut off our phones. It started last year and we really try to separate business and pleasure."
You can bet that Josh applauds his wife's tough style, as well. "Heather is ball buster and she is one of our top agents," he said. "I don't like negotiating against Heather 'cause she fights tooth and nail for every penny of our clients. So I'll give her props for that, but I definitely work easier with Matt."
Before long there will be a new Altman in the world and Josh anticipates that she, too, will pick up where her parents and uncle left off. "My daughter is going to be the most badass real estate agent ever to walk this planet because she's going to get the best of both worlds," he said. "She's gonna get my point of view and she's gonna get Heather's and we are going to turn her into a machine. And she'll be closing multimillion deals while she's sitting in third period class in school. I can guarantee you that. She's gonna take care of mommy and daddy by the time she's 25."
