These days, Gisele Bundchen and her husband Tom Brady are known for their squeaky clean eating habits. Their diets are rumored to be so spotless, in fact, that the worst sin they can commit is to bite into an eggplant. (Nightshades are a no.) So, the Internet was giddy to see Gisele guzzling wine like an actual human after her hubby's team lost the Super Bowl. But as it turns out, the model has a past with using liquor as a coping mechanism — and the stories she told recently aren't so meme-worthy as her football-game display.
In her new memoir, Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life, the model writes about the anxiety she faced down when she started out in the fashion biz. And, her eating and drinking habits were hardly what they are now. "I had been smoking cigarettes, drinking a bottle of wine and three mocha frappucinos every day," Bundchen writes.
Then, there was the aha moment. "I gave up everything in one day," she said. "I was like, ‘That’s it.’ Because I wanted to live. I choose life. I choose to smile again, to be free again. I don’t wanna choose this.”
The model took some down time to return to her native Brazil, and began cleaning up her diet. "I stopped all sugar. Completely,” she told People. “For the first two weeks, I had the worst migraines I’ve ever had in my life. It was a big shock to my body, but it was a three-month kind of cleanse.”
Needless to say, the cleanse paid off. "When you’re that age, in your teens in your early 20s, you don’t think about your body as your temple. You think you’re invincible in some way,” Bundchen said. “But then when your system is so clean you can feel things so much more. An avocado is suddenly the best thing you’ve ever eaten in your life.”
