Jessica Simpson Gets Backlash for "Diet Goals" Tribute to Karl Largerfeld
Expecting mom Jessica Simpson remembered Karl Largerfeld upon his death — but it didn't go over well.
Karl Lagerfeld was not a person to mince words about others' appearance — famously calling Adele"too fat" and Pippa Middleton, well, a butterface. So you might think that Jessica Simpson's tribute to the late fashion icon, which took the same approach, might have felt somehow appropriate in context. But, uh... it seems that it was not received that way.
Sharing on Instagram a photo full of famous faces — including Lagerfeld and a noticeably slender, young version of herself — she wrote, "I don’t even recall him knowing my name, but man did I know his. We have lost a true genius in the fashion world. His designs remain with us forever. RIP #KarlLagerfeld (PS. After baby diet goals.)"
Commenters noted a certain cognitive dissonance created by the disjointed parts of her caption. "Not the time Jess!!!” one wrote.
Another: "Always putting her foot in her mouth. Love her but uh yeah."
Instagram users called her "tacky," "classic Jessica," "awkward," and sarcastically — "inspiring."
Others defended her, appreciating the lightheartedness she brought to the sad occasion — and even noting that her caption took a body-scrutinizing position that might have been after Lagerfeld's own heart.
Lagerfeld himself was also a noted dieter: He lost 92 pounds in 13 months and wrote a book called The Karl Lagerfeld Diet in 2005.
