To keep up with the Kardashians is to know abundant trivia about some of their most iconic cakes — since the family has been making over-the-top confections a signature part of their milestone occasions for decades.
Recent examples: Kylie Jenner's eyebrow-raising birthday cake for "husband" Travis Scott; Stormi Webster's extravagant, motorized confection; Kourtney Kardashian's NSFW nudie-decked 40th birthday cake; the barfing Barbie doll cake for Kylie's 21st... and on and on and on.
For as long as the Kardashians have celebrated with cakes, they have remained loyal to a bakery that is an institution in Los Angeles: Hansen's. And now Kim is showing off just how far back that loyalty stretches — as well as a look at how much has changed in a couple decades, give or take.
She took to her Instagram Stories on June 5 to indulge in some old photos. (To be clear, we are talking about actual, printed photos in the physical, not digital, space — imagine that!) Panning over an old photo album page covered in protective plastic sheeting, she noted she was waxing sentimental over old pics from her sweet 16 party; ffor reference, she is now 38.
Back then, the affair appeared to be a far cry from the types of events the Kardashians host now — although they have long been surrounded by wealth and its trappings.
The pic shows that Kim's cake was a single-tier, white-frosted affair, decked with a purple floral motif. "Look," Kim noted in her narration, "we even had our Hansen's cakes back then."
Just for fun, compare Kim's own sweet 16 cake to her show's — specifically, the cake the family got in celebration of the 16th season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
