One of the great things about having a dog? Everything. One of the bad things about having a dog? You can’t necessarily bring him with you everywhere you go—with particular difficulties surrounding eating or drinking establishments. (Thanks for nothing, FDA.)
Fortunately, there are plenty of restaurants out there that understand your codependency and have worked diligently to circumnavigate the specifics of the law (by having designated dog-friendly areas or other safety measures) while still properly maintaining their health codes. And now dog-friendly restaurants have popped up all over this great nation of ours.
Presenting, in no order, the dog-friendliest restaurants in America.
Rita’s on the River (San Antonio, TX) – This Mexican restaurant offers an abundance of outdoor seating out on the riverwalk. And as one patron noted, “The parking is right above the restaurant, which is so convenient for our non-athletic dogs!”
Barking Dog (New York, NY) – A restaurant and bar with an outdoor seating area that is dog friendly. It even offers a dog water fountain so your furry friend can socialize with other puppers who lunch!
Mutts Canine Cantina (Dallas, TX) – Mutts Cantina is not only a restaurant and bar but a full-fledged dog park! You can enjoy food and drink with your leashed dog on the patio, and then let him run wild and get some exercise in the off-leash area.
Eli’s Table (Charleston, SC) – Often times, “dog friendly” means a pub-like atmosphere, but at Eli’s Table, you can get some of the best Southern eats in Charleston while your dog is treated like royalty on the secluded patio.
Four Dogs Tavern (West Chester, PA) – With dog-friendly patio seating and a full dog menu, this historic brasserie is perfect for a fancier night out.
The Leary Traveler (Seattle, WA) – This pub serves American fare and lots of pro-pupper vibes. The outdoor dog-friendly area is actually larger than the inside!
Norm’s Eatery & Ale House (Seattle, WA) – The dog-themed restaurant (its motto is “Sit and Stay”) in the Fremont neighborhood features a nightly special called the “Doggie Bowl” and welcomes your four-legged friends at all times.
The Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar (Thousand Oaks, CA) – This restaurant welcomes so many dogs that they actually have posted regulations for their canine patrons (“Avoid the ‘three B’s’: Begging, barking, and biting”). The “Bone Appetit” menu offers grilled hamburger or chicken with brown rice, and complimentary cold water, of course!
Sail Pavilion (Tampa, FL) – An open-air restaurant along the waterfront, Sail Pavilion even offers stainless steel water bowls, a clean up station, free dog treats, and a complete dog menu featuring dog-friendly smoothies!
The Dog Bar (Charlotte, NC) – This "100% off leash dog friendly bar" full bar welcomes dogs indoors and outdoors, so long as they’re well-behaved and have their vaccinations. Requires a $10 one-time membership fee where you must present vaccination records.
The Crab Shack (Tybee Island, GA) – A spacious deck overlooking the water offers first-rate service just for your doggos. But beware: The establishment is also very cat-friendly, so if your dog doesn’t take kindly to kitties, you might want to steer clear.
Park Bench Café (Huntington Beach, CA) – This café not only offers a full dog menu but even has a venue specifically for dog birthday parties! And since it’s located inside a park, you can enjoy a post-meal walk with your furry friend to work off those calories.
The Watering Bowl (Denver, CO) – As if the name “The Watering Bowl” and the motto “Your Best Friend’s Bar” and the logo featuring a dog collar weren’t clear enough, Denver’s dog-friendly tavern now offers 7,000 square feet of fully-fenced in private dog park.
Morristown Deli (Morristown, NJ) – This pet-friendly outdoor space has got it all: A dog menu, water bowls for each canine patron, doggie high chairs and boosters, doggie desserts, seasonal dog treats, and even an on-site dog trainer so you can multitask while you munch.
The Morrison Pub (Los Angeles, CA) – Much like many things in Los Angeles, The Morrison Pub has added a dash of glamour to its dog-friendly policies. Patio seating comes with a dog menu, and all service is provided in silver dog bowls, on silver dog trays, with milk bones on the side.
