So that's why they broke up...
In an interview with GQ Billy Bob Thornton confessed, "I never felt good enough for her," referencing his tempestuous three-year marriage to Angelina Jolie.
Before Angie transitioned into a roving global humanitarian she was mainly known as the wild actress and half of one of Hollywood's strangest marriages. The pair wore vials of a drop of each other's blood around their necks and on one red carpet appearance, Billy Bob boasted of them having had sex in the limo on the way over.
But it seems that Angie was already laying the groundwork for her transformation during their 2000-2003 union.
The "Slingblade" actor says that now mom-of-six Angie was meeting world leaders, working with charitable organizations, and interested in working for the United Nations.
"I'm real uncomfortable around rich and important people," he explained.
The oddball couple met on the set of "Pushing Tin" and the attraction was immediate despite their 20-year age difference. At the time Thornton was engaged and living with actress Laura Dean but he quickly jettisoned her for Jolie.
"I left our home to go and make a movie and while I was away my boyfriend got married and I never heard from him again," Laura famously said.
In March 2002 Angie and Billy Bob announced that they were planning to adopt a child from Cambodia together. Maddox was adopted that June but it was revealed Jolie adopted him as a single parent and by September the couple who openly tongued on carpets were kaput.
Just last month Maddox intervened between Jolie and now estranged hubby Brad Pitt during a fiery row precipitating their surprise split.
Billy Bob, 61, is now happily married to wife number six, makeup effects crew member Connie Angland, with whom he shares daughter Bella. She's his fifth child by three different women, including one who was a Playboy model.
And even though it didn't work out between Billy Bob and Angie that doesn't mean there's any bad blood between them. The Arkansas native still has a tattoo visible on his leg as a homage to the "Maleficent" star and the two still catch up on the phone every few months.
