A 33-year-old man has set up a website to help men find second wives, and it already has 35,000 members.
The site, Secondwife, has been successful among Muslim men, and is now catching on with Westerners, says founder Azad Chaiwala, who says the site is all about “old-fashioned family values.”
Azad says he’s even using the site himself, and he’s been on the hunt for two more wives, saying it’s taking time because he’s “picky.” Also, his first wife isn’t thrilled with the idea of sharing her man. “There is not a woman on earth who would be totally comfortable with it,” Azad said.
He has also launched a dating service called Polygamy.com, which boasts, “Welcome to the world of polygamy,” which has gained more than 7,000 members since it launched earlier this year.
Azad says that the sites are successful because polygamy is more popular than ever across the world, but it remains illegal in the U.K., where bigamy carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
But Azad says that his Muslim religion allows him to have up to four wives, as long as they are in agreement with the arrangement. The extra wives can be
recognized through a civil ceremony in a mosque, but cannot have a legal, western service.
“This is my wedding, I do not need to have a piece of paper,” Azad said. “People go to a nightclub and have a one-night stand and that’s the end of it. Men go with prostitutes; people look for dogging sites; there are swingers’ clubs. A man wants to get married to multiple partners in an honorable manner, he wants to share his love and resources—why do you have an issue with that? It is not for everyone – some men are not physically, or financially, capable of taking care of other women.”
With a rise in polygamy, Azad said he is promoting family values.
“I think polygamy is more relevant to this current century than at any other time because there is a lot of human isolation,” he said.
