You don’t break up with Charlie Hunnam even when he stops talking to you for months at a time, you just don’t.
The actor and his girlfriend of 11 years, Morgana McNelis, fell into an odd patch in their longterm relationship when Charlie basically disappeared while shooting “The Lost City Of Z,” in South America.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 36-year-old actor revealed he completely quit talking to Morgana in order to delve into his role as English explorer Percy Fawcett. He originally promised to write home daily but found the mail service where he was filming to be poor.
Charlie then decided to use the distance to live as his character, who leaves behind his wife and child to hunt for a lost city in the Amazon rainforest. He sad he’s aware the decision “obviously makes me sound like a total b*****d.”
But he wanted to do the best job he could, saying he and director James Gray wanted the film to explore the “conflict between family life and the exterior demands... being balanced or in conflict with [our] internal drive to be the people we want to be and achieve the things that we want to achieve.”
To make it up to Morgana, Charlie brought home a natural emerald he called Charlie “an appropriately sized gift.”
“It didn’t remedy all of the trouble I was in, but it got me halfway there,” he said.
The movie is out in April 2017.
