Chris Rock is opening up about his divorce, both on and off the stage.
The comic reveals that most of his latest standup material is focused around his divorce from Malaak Compton-Rock, his wife of 19 years. They finalized their divorce, and a bitter custody battle, in August 2016, and he jokes that this is his “alimony tour.”
“I was a piece of s**t,” Rock tells Rolling Stone he says on stage. He jokes that he cheated with three women, “one famous, one semifamous, and one a member of the retail class.”
He says during his set that he thought he could cheat because he was the one bringing home the bacon—he found out he was wrong.
“‘That’s bullshit,’ he says, rolling his eyes. ‘That actually goes the other way. My faults are magnified. Your significant other, if they really love you, has a high opinion of you. And you let them down.’” says the magazine.
But he also doesn’t talk about divorce for his whole act.
“I asked myself, ‘Do I want to be angry for a year?’ It’s not a cool place to be. It’s not healthy,” Rock said.
It’s a sweet peek at the new material, since the “Total Blackout” tour makes audience members place their phones and other devices in secure pouches that are only unlocked at the end of the show.
