Look, we're never going to turn down birthday cake, not even a cheap sheet cake from the supermarket—but if you told us that our birthday cake this year could be our own custom-designed layered extravaganza, made by a superstar pastry chef and delivered right into our eagerly shaking hands? At around the same price we'd pay for a normal fancy birthday cake?
We'd think you were lying. But the dream is real. And it's happening at Milk Bar, the New York City-based dessert spinoff of celebrity chef David Chang’s Momofuku restaurants, where James Beard Award-winning pastry chef Christina Tosi presides over now-famous sweets like crack pie and cereal-milk soft serve ice cream. And now, for her next about-to-be-famous act, comes the Build Your Own Birthday Cake. Best of all, you don't have to live anywhere near a Milk Bar location to get one; they'll ship the cakes anywhere in the U.S.
The confetti-studded beauties are priced at $60, and here's how the whole thing works: First, you pick out one of the layered six-inch birthday cakes, and choose whichever frosting you want, from classic vanilla to pie dough, chocolate fudge, chocolate malt, and strawberry.
Then select your own spreadable filling: Will it be fudge sauce, lemon cheesecake, brown butter cheesecake, passionfruit curd or strawberry jam?
Nope, you're not not done yet: Add a little texture with crumbs sprinkled on top, in flavors like birthday, chocolate, malted milk, and milk.
Now your work is done, and you've done almost no work at all. The Milk Bar pros will then bake and assemble your fantasy cake, layer by layer, and off it goes into your awaiting arms.
Cakes are shipped frozen for arrival on Thursdays, so you'd better plan ahead if your birthday (or your BFF's) is coming up soon.
