UPDATE (Oct. 30, 2017, 12:30 p.m.) GLAAD released a statement in response to Kevin Spacey and his decision to come out following an accusation of sexual assault.
"Coming-out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault," said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD. "This is not a coming-out story about Kevin Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp and all those who bravely speak out against unwanted sexual advances. The media and public should not gloss over that."
Kevin Spacey has come out following a sexual misconduct allegation made by Rent and Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp in an interview with Buzzfeed.
The incident reportedly took place about 30 years ago when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26 while each of the actor's were starring in separate Broadway productions. Rapp says that he was invited to Spacey's house for a party and later on in the night was "drunk" and made advances to him on the bed. “He was trying to seduce me,” he recalled of the night. “I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
While Rapp shared on Twitter he will not be commenting further about the incident, it did prompt Spacey to address the allegation, during which he also confirmed that he is gay.
He headed to Twitter to share his statement: “I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
He continued, “This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.”
