It’s our least favorite time of the year — the time in which there are absolutely no new The Real Housewives of New York episodes on our TV. Luckily, we have the next best thing this side of watching Luann de Lesseps fall into the bushes on repeat (sorry Lu, you know we love ya!); we have a brand new cast of The Real Shelter Dogs. Today’s doggos come from Animal Haven, located in Manhattan.
Animal Haven is a nonprofit organization that focuses on finding homes for abandoned dogs and cats. They have lots of great programs that enhance the bond between animals and people, including programs to teach children to care about animal welfare and surrender prevention assistance services. They have even taken in dogs from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, some of which you have the opportunity to adopt today!
And now stop petting all your cats named Baby and meet your Real Shelter Dogs, complete with opening credits-worthy taglines!
“Being adorable is easy, if you're willing to work for it.” - Fido
Fido is a super sweet 3-year-old terrier mix who is great with people and other dogs! Despite being paralyzed from the waist down, he is always happy-go-lucky and loves life. He has a wheelchair for walks and you’d be surprised at the speed he can maintain. His bladder needs to be expressed several times a day in order for him to go to the bathroom. This may sound daunting, but it’s actually quite easy. Please give him a chance and come meet him today!
“Diamonds aren't a girl's best friend — attention is.” - Camille
Camille is a gorgeous 3-year-old Black Lab who was rescued from Puerto Rico (through The Sato Project) after Hurricane Maria. She is an energetic and sweet girl who loves attention. She is good with other dogs and adores her human friends. She is a good walker, but is still fine-tuning her leash manners. She is house-trained and never makes a mess in her room. She is not a fan of stairs, so she’s hoping to find a home without them!
“You’re not seeing double, if you are susceptible to cuteness, you are in trouble.” - Pablo and Reno
Pablo (top) and Reno (bottom) are two very sweet brothers who were rescued from Puerto Rico after the hurricane. The 1-year-old Lab mixes can be a little shy at first, but come out of our shell quickly. Because they are SO bonded, Animal Haven is looking for a family to adopt them together!
“Age is just a number, but this pupper is timeless!” - Sandals
Sandals is a 9-year-old terrier mix who was adopted from Animal Haven as a young girl and was with the same family for the past 7 years. Sadly, her family’s circumstances changed and they were no longer able to keep her. The change in environment has been very scary for her, but she is slowly becoming less frightened and making friends. She spends most of her time lounging in her bed next to her favorite staff members. Staff and volunteers adore her and spoil her every day. They even paint her nails so that she can feel extra fancy! She can be wary of new men, but have made great progress. She is tolerant of other dogs and generally very easy going. She has great leash manners and is completely potty-trained.
“Friends come and go, but family is furever.” - Vida
Vida is a 6-month-old Chihuahua mix that came to Animal Haven from an out-of-state shelter. She was diagnosed with “atresia ani” (malformation of the anus) when she was younger. She has undergone extensive veterinary treatment to correct her condition and thankfully, she has been doing much better. She still has some tummy troubles every once in a while, but they are very manageable for the right adopter. She is a complete sweetheart who loves dogs and people. She can’t wait to find a forever family who is willing to take on a dog with her needs and shower them with kisses!
