Paddles, New Zealand's New First Cat, Is Stealing the International Spotlight

Please notice the adorable paws.

Paddles, a cat with oversize paws and extra claws (which is called a polydactyl), may be the most famous feline in the world this week. She lives with Jacinda Ardern, the newly-elected Prime Minister of New Zealand, and her partner Clarke Gayford, and has become a social media sensation with her own Twitter account.

She's answering questions from followers who use the hashtag #AskPaddles, flirting with other kitties and even appearing to hire some as personal Cabinet members.

And she has also emerged for press conferences — and guest appearances on her parents' accounts.

Ardern shot down rumors that Gayford is behind the Twitter account, but they do support it.

"I am quite happy for that person to continue logging on behalf of Paddles," she told Newshub. "Keeping in mind Paddles has thumbs, I can't put it past her, it's her own account as well. She's a polydactyl."
