Sarah Jessica Parker is about to show off just how talented she is in her new HBO series Divorce, premiering this Oct. 9. In the new dramedy, Sarah plays Frances, a woman who decides to begin her life again by filing for divorce, and discovers it’s not easy to end a marriage. Take note: The Sex and the City alum doesn’t have anything in common with this new TV version of herself.
“I don’t relate to it,” the actress told People at Divorce’s New York City premiere. “It feels so specific.” Sarah has been happily married to fellow actor Matthew Broderick since 1997, they’ll celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary next May.
Sarah realizes that some may question her decision to play a woman who’s rethinking her whole commitment thing, and if it’s making the actress contemplate her own lifelong union. She shut down that notion pretty quickly. “What I do on screen doesn’t cross the placenta, do you know what I mean?” she shared.
“I play all sorts of parts that I suppose one would wonder — but that’s my job.”
Sarah does have some thoughts on why marriages end. "For me, it's really the investment in the other person," She told Marie Claire about keeping a marriage intact. "And it's the expectations you have. They change and you get smarter, and maybe you think those expectations aren't worth striving for with this person, and that's when people bail."
As for the secret to her own marriage, Sarah keeps mum, literally. She once told reporters, “The secret is, we don’t discuss it. To reporters or anybody else. We don’t hold it up as an example and we don’t air our dirty laundry.”
