This Uber-Cool Art Installation Will Let You Walk on Water in Italy

Christo's back... and sublime as ever.

Italy’s Lake Iseo is getting set to look a bit different than usual these days and different, in this case, is good. Really good.

Italian artist Christo is the mind behind the temporary art installation known as The Floating Piers that will allow visitors to walk around the lake in a most glorious (and cultured!) way. You might have last heard Christo’s name when he and his late partner Jeanne-Claude created The Gates in Central Park in 2005.

The new piece from the innovative creator is similar in a sense. The Gates was made of fabric that shifted with the wind, and The Floating Piers is a modular floating dock system that rises only just above the water’s surface, gently undulating with the lake’s movement, allowing those who walk on it to feel as though they really are walking on water.

The project, which is Christo's first outdoor art installation piece since The Gates, will live for 16 days this summer, beginning on June 18. Only about an hour or so from Milan, visitors from around the world are expected to flock to the site.

Looking to check out the art by way of a VVIP experience? (Naturally.) Thanks to travel company Black Tomato, you can see it all in some serious style. Think: a private helicopter tour with experts in tow that circles around the lake in all of its glory, followed by a look at the piece from the vantage point of a hot air balloon. This aerial view portion of the Black Tomato tour precedes a three-course lunch prepared by a top Italian chef in a private villa that overlooks the lake.

If that wasn’t enough, the company's Lake Iseo tour designed around The Floating Piers continues with a boat tour and a private entrance drop-off to the piers themselves. Black Tomato is even offering to arrange a meeting with Christo for travelers who happen to be super serious art lovers. Now that's our idea of art appreciation.

So block off your calendar and book your trip — because Lake Iseo is going to be where it's at this summer.
