Chris Salvatore, 31, describes himself like this: “I'm an actor singer person living in LA taking a break from it all to take care of #myneighbornorma."
He’s talking about his elderly former neighbor Norma Cook, 89, now his roommate and “grandma,” even though they aren’t blood related. Norma calls Chris “the grandson she never had.”
How did this unlikely pair come to live together?
Chris tells the story on his Instagram page, where he documents his days with Norma, caring for her through her battle with leukemia. After she recently spent two months in the hospital battling pneumonia and breathing problems, doctors said she wouldn't live past the holidays. She has no living family or children.
They started as neighbors who would wave to each other from their kitchen windows in the same apartment complex in West Hollywood, California. After a door knock on Chris’ part five years ago, the two immediately connected and began drinking champagne together and talking about life.
After Norma’s hospital stay, she couldn’t return home without around the clock care, which wasn’t covered by her insurance.
Chris started a GoFundMe page for his BFF, raising $50,000 which was quickly spent on medical needs. So, he invited her to move in.
The other option would have been sending her to a nursing home that wouldn’t have been so nice.
Chris posts photos and videos of him and Cook on Instagram using the hashtag #myneighbornorma.
One recent postage an update on the duo’s living situation, with Chris writing:
“I hope this little update will bring some sunshine to your rainy day here in La. We are reaching the 2 month mark since my neighbor Norma has come home from the hospital and I am so happy to share that she is continuing to prove the doctors and nurses wrong by continuing to THRIVE! To prolong the remaining funds to prevent her from having to be moved into a county facility, Norma and I have decided to move her into my apartment across the hall where she now has her own beautiful room and bathroom! She loves it! I do most of my work at home so I am here most of the time to care for her so it only made sense to the both of us. She is my adopted grandmother and I am her grandson she never had. :) We will still have caregivers coming in to care for her as well as her weekly hospice visits from the nurses and doctors. I just wanted to let you all know Norma loves reading your comments and I seriously think all the support and love is keeping her healthy. Now who wants to come to dinner? #myneighbornorma... I mean #myroomatenorma.”
One commenter wrote that Chris’ good hearted deed was making news worldwide.
“This news reached the Netherlands and I am officially in love! What a beautiful person you are! Much love for the both of you.”
Thought Chris’ good deed stopped there? Nope. He also took in Norma’s beloved cat, Hermes.
If there is a heaven, Chris just made the VIP list.
