Getting ready for a trip to the American South? Well, you'll want to be prepared. First, make sure you know your Southern sayings so you can decode what folks are really saying about you. And then make sure you pack right. Here's what you'll need.
1. Cowboy boots
Or cowgirl boots! You’re going to want some sturdy and tall boots to get you through in the south. Combat boots do the trick just fine, too. The point is this: Yes, they’re part of the fashion down south, but they also keep you safe from pokey grass, tarantulas, fire ants, and the like, so don’t skimp in the boot department. Tip: Throw in some cute boot socks for the chillier weather.
2. A wide-brimmed hat
You can go the route of a cowboy or cowgirl hat or you can go in the direction of a giant straw sun hat. Even a fedora with a wide brim will do — just make sure you protect your head from the serious sun and you’ll be set.
3. Lightweight fabrics
Even the winters can be pretty warm in the south, so make sure to pack some lightweight clothing that will protect you from the elements while simultaneously helping you to dress for the occasion. Think: lightweight denim, chambray, linen, silk, and chiffon.
4. Belt buckle
A big belt buckle has no practical function (that we know of?) — but if you have one you’ve been waiting for the perfect occasion to sport, well your trip down south might be the perfect place and time.
5. A swimsuit
Don’t ever assume you don’t need a swimsuit in the South. Swimming is a must in the oven-hot summers, but since the weather is often nice, hot tubs and heated pools abound in the winter, too. So do yourself a favor and make sure the swimsuit goes where you go.
6. Flat sandals
For much of the year in the South, you’ll want to cool down in part by keeping your feet open to the breeze, so sandals are a must. If you pack a good pair of cute flat sandals, you’ll look good, stay cool, and still have the ability to explore town without inconveniencing your feet too much.
7. Your favorite jeans
You probably wouldn’t go anywhere without your favorite jeans anyway, right? Even if that’s the case, make double sure they’re with you for a trip to the South, where the atmosphere everywhere is a bit more casual than other parts of the country. Heels and jeans with a nice blouse work just fine for even some of the nicest restaurants, so you’ll get plenty of use out of your favorite pair.
8. Button-down shirt
Whether we’re talking soft cotton or plaid flannel, a button-down shirt of some sort is essential for a trip to the South. This layer is easily altered to keep up with the weather and will add to the casual charm look you’ll be going for.
9. Statement jewelry
From dangling earrings to jaw-dropping necklaces, pack these outfit accents because a trip to the South is their time to shine.
