Will Smith was right when he made the saying popular: Parents just don’t understand. But now he’s the parent, and he shut down what his kid thought was a pretty sick plan.
Specifically, Big Willie’s own son, Jaden Smith, was trying to con his dad into a bit of underage drinking. During an interview on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon last week, Will said Jaden tried to make some 18th birthday travel plans in the U.K. but his dad was onto him before long.
“He has a show coming out called The Get Down so he was promoting in London,” Will explained. “So he was like, ‘Guys, you know, it’s before my birthday, I’ll be promoting in London, everybody should come to London and we’ll just celebrate my birthday there!”
Hey, that sounds like a fun — and innocent — plan, right? Will thought so!
Well, pay attention, here’s the thick of the plot.
Will continued: “Then we go to a restaurant and, you know, Jaden was just particularly excited,” Smith said. “We sit down at the restaurant and he looks at the waiter and he says, ‘I’ll have a tequila.’”
Oh, so that was the plan: Jaden wanted to get his hands on a spot of booze thanks to England’s drinking age of 18, compared to the relatively more stringent 21-plus laws in the U.S.
But dad wasn’t having it. “I was thinking fast. I said, ‘Oh, but hold on, hold on, hold on. It’s only noon in L.A. and you weren’t born till 4, so you’re not 18 yet!' I was like, 'This joker tricked me!'"
Oh snap. See? Parents are the same no matter time nor place — whether L.A. or the U.K.
