3 Ways to "Rough It" on Vacation... in Pure Luxury

Get ready to see the world in a whole new way — if you have the cash.

What do you picture when you think of the words "roughing it?" If you conjure images of a dusty tent and a campfire, let us expand your mind.

More specifically, let Million Dollar Listing New York’s Fredrik Eklund be the one to enlighten you — since he knows from luxury experiences. In his new digital series, Million Dollar Listing's Ka-Ching!, he offers a few suggestions for people seeking something more exciting — and with more bragging rights — as an alternative to a luxury hotel stay in the middle of an urban environment. By the way? they'll cost you. Big time.

1.  Polar Adventure

The Ocean Diamond super-yacht carries 189 passengers at a time for polar exhibitions. It's one of the fastest and most environmentally friendly ships in Antarctica, and it's super comfy too — with 101 tasteful cabins and suites, plus large common spaces, a club lounge, and a restaurant. The price tag? More than $28,000 for a 10-day cruise. "Imagine dodging icebergs and shattering ice fields all from your room," Fredrik says. "It'll cost [you], but think of all the little baby penguins you can wave to from your patio!"

2.  Surfer's Paradise

More than 7,000 islands comprise the Philippines, so "it might be hard to decide where in the Philipines you’re going to disappear to," Fredrik says. But he has one excellent idea: Dedon Island. The resort there comes complete with legendary rustic pods in which to swing and reflect — called "nest rests," designed by the island's owner. And the island is one of the only places in the world where you an catch a so-called "Cloud 9," the rarest of the rare perfect wave! Rooms alone here run upwards of $2,400 a night. Ka-ching indeed.

3.  Mountain Splendor

If you're a nature-loving type, Fredrik recommends Montana — but don't venture into new territory like the explorers of a bygone era. No, check out Western Montana in pure luxury at Resort at Paws Up. "Your days will be filled with horseback riding and fly fishing," Fredrik says. So "you’re going to want to crash back into your tent, complete with electricity, on-site bathroom, and a personal butler. Just like Lewis and Clark had, right?" So wrong... and yet so right.
