Just about six months ago, we brought you the news that Charleston earned the distinction of the best city in North America, having won Travel + Leisure's reader poll. But best on the continent wasn't enough to describe the infinite charms of the Southern town: Now it's been named the best city in the entire world!
Charleston edged up from the No. 2 city on last year's list to claim the No. 1 spot on the magazine's annual reader poll. Readers described a city that feels like no other on the globe. They love Charleston for its sense of history and flower-lined streets, as well as an impressive array of superlative hotels and restaurants. People also cited good shopping, plus the charming waterfronts at Sullivan’s Island and Folly Beach.
The top 15 cities on this list — which is part of the magazine's annual World’s Best Awards survey, in which readers weigh in on their fave islands, cruise lines, airlines, and more — also included a mix of international destinations. A pair of Italian cities — Rome and Florence — made the list, at No. 11 and 4 respectively. Thailand's Chiang Mai came in at No. 2.
The roundup also included a two other U.S. cities... both in the South! Shout out to New Orleans at 7 and Savannah at 9.
Southern Charm's Shep Rose couldn't have been prouder of Charleston's place on the list, tweeting his support of his "favorite place on earth."
