9 Things We Learned From NPH's 'Actors Studio' Sit-Down

From his magic skills to the people who influenced him most, the actor told all to James Lipton.

You may know Neil Patrick Harris from How I Met Your Mother, Doogie Howser M.D. or the Harold and Kumar movies, but James Lipton went deep to get the scoop on the Emmy, Tony and soon-to-be Oscars host. We've gathered the nine most shocking things about NPH we learned from that magical night.

Woopie Goldberg was his nanny.
NPH got his big break at the age of 12! He was cast as a waspy kid opposite of Whoopi Goldberg who played his nanny in Clara’s Heart. The role earned him his first Golden Globe nomination.

He's got A-List icons as friends.
He and husband David Burtka have been together for 11 years and they had music icon Sir Elton John perform at their intimate Italian wedding.

He was almost a superhero.

Good thing he stuck with his middle name.

His personal tics inspire his characters.
NPH reveals to James that like his character Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother, his favorite word is "awesome."

He's not afraid to slim down for a role.
During his Tony Award-winning stint as Hedwig in the Broadway smash Hedwig and the Angry Inch, he lost 21 pounds—and never had an understudy!

His dad was a significant musical inspiration.

While he is widely known for his singing chops in Broadway shows like Rent and Cabaret, he also knows how to play the piano and played the xylophone in his school band, thanks largely to his father. Talk about multi-talented.

He's a magician!
He got Inside the Actor’s Studio’s James Lipton to believe in magic. Yeah that’s right, not only does he play a magician on HIMYM but he really is one. He's even been recognized by the Academy of Magical Arts!

Sally Field and Ron Howard were big influences on his early career.

Acceptance and hard work will get you through anything, even being Opie Taylor or Sister Bertrille.

He's got more TV projects in the works.
Not only is Neil hosting the Oscars this year but he recently signed on to be part of NBC’s version of the popular British comedy-game show Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.
