"It's Game Day!" Thanks, Sheldon. The men's team is looking good -- like a group? gaggle? of menehune. The ladies' team not so much. The bouillabaisse stock still isn't done and won't be for quite some time. "Patience," Josie says. Grrr. Time is running out on the stock and the gelatin hasn't been added yet, so Kristen makes a last-minute call to skip the gelatin and add cream and soy instead. Kristen would prefer one of the dishwashers in place of Josie. To which the dishwashers yell back, "Hey! I'm pulling my weight!" Just kidding. That didn't happen. But it sure would've been funny. Stefan and Brooke prepare their front-of-house staffs, while Lizzie warns Kristen that she's going to get inundated with having to look at everything.
The judges arrive at Atelier Kwan first. Danny Meyer comments on the menu graphics. First up is Lizzie's charcuterie and the judges love it. Then they wait for their next dish. And wait. Out comes the bouillabaisse and they see something's wrong -- broth is missing. Well, that's because the foamer wasn't tested early enough and isn't working correctly. Josie's sensing "just a little bit of attitude" from Kristen. Well, if she could see me she'd be sensing a lot. I'm boiling over at this point. Besides the sauce, the protein isn't cooked consistently. On to Kristen's Beef Bourguignon. Not enough sauce. Brooke's cheese course is OK, unoffensive... unlike Kristen's play on a macaron/macaroon which Gail found very offensive. Not to the entire Jewish people. Just to herself this week. Ha!
The ladies are done... for now. The real action is coming at Judges' Table shortly.
I won't go through every course at Urbano, but will say that Sheldon led a team, and kept his cool while giving constructive criticism. His servers were fudging things up a bit, but he didn't yell. I wonder, though, what would have happened had Stefan had told him how annoyed the judges were with the hospitality bit. Although Stefan said he cared more about the judges' table than the other customers, he seemed to be way more hospitable to the diners -- who wouldn't leave -- than he was to the judges. And while it might be true that diners return to restaurants for service, not food, this is Top Chef. The food matters, and Stefan's dish was good. It was obvious that the men's meal was better. Every dish got a good review.
I couldn't believe that they let Josie stay over Kristen. I agree with the last comment about how they make the women who can actually cook and keep around the useless chefs, like Josie.
I hope Kristin makes it back for last chance kitchen. I'm very disappointed at you Padma.
I missed last weeks show. I could not believe that Josie is still there. I understand that the producers need to keep someone around to irritate the viewers and apparently Josie is it. She is the epitome of the individual who makes up for her lack of abilities by being loud, rude and irritating. JOSIE, should stop blaming our negative opinions on the fact that she are a gay, ethnically mixed female. The fact is she lacks the skills to be Top Chef.
Cannot believe that after hearing Padma say that Stefan should go for his lack of service as front of house AND Tom's statement that Josie should go for her dish they send home WHO?
Kirsten......is it a serious problem that top chef feels the need to dispose of all WOMEN who could actually challenge some the lame male chefs to ensure that a male wins? just saying. Only one female has won top chef and even then she was discredited because "dear Richard" choked.....It bothered Tom [or the powers that be] so-o-o much that they GAVE Richard the first all stars title. Just my 2.5 cents worth! Also, is it just me or does anyone else feel that it is a cheat to bring back chefs that have formerly competed? They had their shot...let them tryout for allstars or come up with top chef alsoran......................
Josie is this year's "Jamie." She slides by perhaps on the basis that she is a returning chef, and the powers that be, want someone still in that position. Josie has shown no value as a Top Chef, and is merely sliding by in the middle. This past episode is the saddest in where Kristen went home for Josie's in-capabilities. Josie should have take responsibility for her faults, not Kristen!
lieder I still think Jamie was a better chef than Josie, Josie needs to pick a new career. At least Jamie can cook a mean scallop, haha
I have to agree with those here who have, time and time again, suggested that some major change has to be done with the front-of-house position in RW. From all we've seen, while you can get sent home for doing a bad job, you can't win if you ace it. Remember Fabio's front-of-house management during all-stars? Even Tom commented that he had never seen something like that, yet Fabio didn't get the win.
Maybe an option would be to bring in some past contestants (or even the winners from previous seasons), or someone else with good front-of-house skills to do that job, and also have them give their own opinions about how the restaurant operated. Their insight could prove to be very valuable, and issues such as this Kristen/Josie debacle could be detected and dealt with.
The person who I thought was going to WIN Top Chef--and whose cooking I was excited to see every week is going home--before Josie--the singularly most obnoxious woman in the world--who also appears incapable of cooking--and suffers dearly in time management. I know this kind of drama makes for great TV--but the judges should be ashamed of themselves.
I am disgusted with the direction this show has taken. Josie should have gone home a long time ago yet she's still there instead of Kristen. Stefan was losing earlier in the show and they allowed him to stay too. I have deleted Top Chef from my DVR. Kristen was ROBBED!!!
I will never watch top chef again. How could Josie have been saved yet again. She has coasted through this whole season. It was so wrong to send Kristen home, she was so talented. Padma, what were you thinking!
What a disappointing decision by the judges. Josie is useless. NO ONE in the stew room wants her there. I hope Kristen continues to win LCK and ends up in the final. I can't wait to see Kristen annihilate Josie in LCK when the time comes....which CANNOT be far off. Josie should never have been asked back to Top Chef for this season, nor should she have skated through to this point in this season's competition. She is not likable or legitimate to viewers. Padma could not have been MORE wrong tonight in her assessment tonight.
I have to agree with some of the comments read earlier on the relationship between Executive Chef, Kristen and support chef, Josie. As an executive chef, we have control over the chefs that work for us, i.e. in execution, in standards,...etc. Kristen was not given the kind of authority that the typical Executive chef carries, so ultimately having to settle for sub-standard food and the execution of it. Had she had the control needed in the kitchen, Josie would have started her broth the day before (had I been the exec chef, I would have seen to it), but Kristen didn't have the authority to force Josie to DO IT RIGHT! Josie has slid by in this competition with sub-standard food resulting in her being in the bottom numerous times. So, why does she always get a pass when, clearly, she has been consistent in her travels to the bottom. Padma even said, at the table, "Josie should be sent home for this broth".......sure changed her tune during judging table, when Gail hit it on the head about Josie skating by and not having to take any REAL responsibility for her cooking. I guess what Padma wants, Padma gets......it must be the short skirts and the long legs.
Usually, I stand in agreement with the judges, but this time, ya'll screwed the pooch on this one. Kristen is more of a Top Chef than Josie will EVER be. A Top Chef is a chef with integrity that doesn't have to stoop to throwing collegues under the bus to win - competition or not. A win with integrity is the true character of a Top Chef - because it's your character that the people around you live with day to day.
Enough of Padma! We have to tolerate her dancing around in the promos, catching fish, and now bashing Kristin. That last elimination was a travesty. Please, Andy Cohen, less Padma...and let's get back to what this show is about...amazing chefs...and the food!
I have to say that I don't agree with the judges... Kristen had proven to be the better chef.
With 4 wins under her belt and no lows.. How can Josie stay with 6 lows? on top of that has proved all though the shows that she had bad time management. ( Tom even bitched about her shows).I really hope Kristen, will kick ass in Last Chance Kitchen! I think she can win! YOU GO GIRL!
One more comment on Restaurant Wars. OK you take the two best chefs. Have them divide up into teams, with the two best as "executive chef". They have no authority over their teammates. Like I've said, Kristen couldn't fire josie, or send her home, she had no way to compel josie do her job. Then you eliminate the best chef in the competition, because a low class person with no morale's, integrity, ethics, or talent pulls a bush league move to sabotage the better contestant/person. That sums it up in a nutshell.
The buck should only stop at the top, if they have control. If Kristen or Sheldon had actual authority over their team, then the buck should stop with them. They didn't, and it shouldn't. Everyone should be judged on their performance.
I do agree with the person who said that padma obviously had some sort of issue with Kristen. Any ways I'll let it go eventually, I'm just still furious about this BS.
You hit the nail right on the head, everything i was gonna post you did. I was a big Padma fan (for obvious reasons) but after last episode she doesnt know her ass from her elbow and Gail should have put her in her place at Judges table.
Stefan's retort, "I'm a chef not a server", when criticized about his service, was the most intelligent thing said during the episode. The front of house position should be axed from future seasons of Top Chef. What purpose does it serve? The contestants are chosen and judged throughout the competition for their cooking and leadership skills in the kitchen. To suddenly expose them to elimination for their front of house skills in one episode creates the risk that the best chef will be eliminated for reasons unrelated to their cooking.
I say the the front of house be run completely by waiting staff. By all means hold it against the leader of the losing team if they fail to ensure that floor staff are able to properly explain dishes to diners. But don't hold it against them simply because they fail to make good waiters.
I have to agree with everyone here. Josie should have been the one to go. She has under-performed in every challenge, and for some mysterious reason, the judges have seen fit to keep her on. And what was going on with Padma? Her critique of Kristen was overly harsh and catty (jealous much?). In fact, it almost acts like she is the only one on the show who is allowed to be attractive. Still, there is no excuse for the way she went after her. I almost wished Kristen had buried a fork in Padma's hand, but fortunately cooler heads ruled the day.
Deimos40 Well said. My wife and I too wonder as to why Padma acted the way she did towards the end...it really boggles the mind! But I presume in the end, it's all about the friggin ratings. So disappointed...
Truly hope that Kristen will win Last Kitchen, and gets back in the game later!
We rooting for you Kristen!!!
Josie should have gone home a long time ago. Because they have kept her around for so long tells me this show has no credibility. Every episode she makes crap and she constantly can not manage her time and lets not forget she is obnoxious. She screwed Kristen and she knew it. This episode truly makes me think this show has truly jumped the shark.
Congrats Top Chef on losing a long-time viewer. The elimination of Kristen was weak. With so many other cooking shows/contests out there to watch I would think Top Chef would actually want to ensure 'top chefs' were competing on their show. I think the judges explanations to their pathetic decision was on par with Josie's cooking ability.
I hate this blog. You could be talking about the outdoor kitchen, the space used for Restaurant Wars, Challenges in procuring equipment, the local shopping venues. The Team Top Chef (Top Staff) blog is kinda pointless right now.
Absolutely ridiculous that Kristen is gone! Why is Josie still there, she was awful before and she is worse now, doesn't take responsibly, back stabs and she is obnoxious!! I hope Kristen comes back and kicks everyones ass, she has made the best food all season! I don't know who makes these decisions but obviously they don't know what they are doing!!!
Josie was unmemorable in her own season. She's memorable now, and for all the wrong reasons. I was very much against bringing back former contestants to compete with new blood on Season 10. If you do this gimmick again, how about bringing back a genuinely talented, competent chef? Like, oh, KRISTEN KISH. She is an example of the person who truly belongs in this competition. Not some loose cannon who "could" make for entertaining television.
DangleParticiple I remember Josie very well during her season, who could forget that donkey bray she uses as a laugh?
Last nights elimination was crap. Josie should have gone home. Krirsten, even though it was her concept, Josie is the one who screwed up. What happened last night was wrong and completely unfair. Bad call by the judges.
Shall we start the drumbeat again for "instant replay" available to the judges so they can get a more realistic picture of the kitchen drama? It ain't just pea puree that goes missing when the cheftestants offer up their versions of what led to the disappointing dishes. I know we all want to throw our flags at LEAST every other episode ...
I've already tweeted some pretty harsh things about last night's TC, but the reality is that Kristen's elimination and the relentless coasting of the abysmal Josie is just the final straw in a long, painful demise of what used to be my favorite show on the planet. The fact is, TC has been going downhill for a long time. There hasn't been a truly compelling season since the 6th, when the competition was so stacked with stars (Voltaggios, Jen Carroll, Kevin Gillespie and others) that every episode was mind-blowing. Since that peak season, the contestants (I refuse to use your kitchy term, Bravo) have been increasingly boring, lacking both pedigree and creativity. In nine seasons there has still only been one female winner (abhorrent, Bravo). Even the past few seasons' winners have been so forgettable I couldn't even tell you their names. Did I mention this used to be my FAVORITE SHOW?! Snoozefest, guys. And ever since you started this Last Chance Kitchen nonsense as a desperate ploy to drive traffic to your website and social media platforms, the judges and producers have been operating with a clear mandate to send the most talented chefs (of an already painfully average assortment) home early. What an affront to the thousands of loyal viewers of the television program. You're cutting your nose off to spite your face. That's why I assert that this show has jumped the shark. A show that was once an industry leader has devolved into an also-ran. As I said in one of my tweets, if I wanted to watch a bunch of average chefs I'd be watching Hell's Kitchen. I guess as might as well start now. Adios, Top Chef. Thanks for the memories.
I second your statements! WTF has happened to this show, this week was a travesty and I am done with what was one of my favorite shows. Shame on you TC judges, especially Padma.
One more comment, Micah also should have stayed instead of josie. I just watched padma's comments on the after show. She was dead wrong, when you are in a competition, and your competitor is on your team and obviously back stabs you, the buck doesn't stop with you. Hello, you aren't there boss, you can't fire them. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, the only reason, I can see for Kristen to go home, is that she did make one very big mistake, She picked josie. Of course, I think maybe she is too nice and classy to see that josie is such an immoral person with no ethics or integrity.
Are you freaking kidding me? I am done with this show. The judges are idiots, and josie is one of the most horrible people on television. I mean, she should have been gone at the berry farm, if not before. Every show she screws up or back stabs someone, and I think ok, good, finally those idiots are going to send her packing, and they don't. I couldn't believe that they sent Bart home instead of her, and now Kristen. Shame on you, Kristen is the best one in the kitchen, like I said, I'm done. No healthy choice for me, won't support the show in any way.
Awesome blog entry, as always! My jaw is sore from grinding my teeth from sheer frustration, I even popped some popcorn, relishing the thought of seeing poor porrrrrr pitiful Josie be sent knives packing, but, no.
I do get it why Kirsten had to go, though, unlike many who vow they will never watch the show again. How many times have I said that in the past 10 years watching TC? But, every one of you will continue watching, and I've got a feeling, Josie will get her well-deserved comeuppance, long, long overdue. And of course, Kirsten is going to be the next TC.
We'll all be back Season 11, y'all know it. .
Next week will mark the first time that I have missed a Top Chef episode since its inception. I simply will not watch any more: Padma's behavior in eliminating Kristen was uncalled for, and it seems clear that the decision to select Josie was an thinly disguised ploy to garner ratings. Tom C., this is not something, I'm sure, of which you're proud.
BrianPrice what about the pea puree incident?
While things have been going on in TC that is obviously foul...we still go back and watch the show....still watched after the pea puree. Maybe not so devoted to the show as before....but will continue as everyone has even after that horrible pea puree incident where the obvious thief has his big face implanted at the restaurant as a winner for a dish that was not his....and Tom was in the kitchen hearing the commotion as everyone was hopelessly searching for the missing pea puree that mysteriously landed on someone else's plate. If you still watched after that....you'll continue even after this...
I really think they should stop doing Restaurant Wars.
Or at least stop judging them. They keep kicking off the most talented contestants because they don't judge the contests correctly.
Josie should have been GONE A LONG TIME AGO!!!!!!!!! I AM SO PISSED THAT THE JUDGES VOTED Kristen out OVER JOSIE. Josie should have been off the show episodes ago. I have never been so upset and disgusted with Top Chef as I am today...my only conclusion is that they did it for ratings.....to shock us......to get us reeled up!!!!! Josie has no integrity, she was being a bad team player not using her time efficently and fucked up the bouillabaisse. Josie is a piece of s- -t for not taking responsibilty for her own dish and blaming Kristen. JOSIE LACKS INTEGRITY, LACKS CLASS, & LACKS TALENT MOST OF ALL.
I completely agree that all Josie had to do was thank the judges for the complement that the soup was good, and say she wished they got more. But no, that's not what happened. She had to go out and pull a Rosie O'Donnell.
It's becoming increasingly clear that she's this season's Mikey (from season 2), except she's not a lovable dope like he was. Howie (from season 3) had better execution and timing than Josie. She just doesn't care, and is completely insubordinate. She's said that she left her season too soon because she was dragged down by Marisa, but truthfully she dragged down every single team she was in.
Restaurant wars is such a joke. Every season this episode is so disappointing. Josie over Kristen? Seriously? Its clear after watching the season that Kristen is such a far superior chef. Shame on Josie for basically doing everything she could to sabotage Kristen. If the game was Survivor and NOT Top Chef, Josie would definitely have outplayed on this episode. Shame on Kristen for 1) picking Josie in the first place 2) for not managing Josie's time when she was clearly sanbagging and 3) for not fighting for herself when at judges table. (They were trying to get her to fight, they were trying to carve her an out). And most of all shame on Padma. At best she missed the forest for the trees. At worst she was just trying to paint the other judges into a corner by playing the "Clint" card and argue that the captain owns all mistakes. I'm beginning to think that Padma can only be happy if she is the smartest, most successful woman in the room. Top Chef, you would do well to treat RW's like any other episode and bring back only the Chefs who have done a bad job regardless of what restaurant they worked for. Award a winning restaurant, but bring back the Chef's from both teams that deserve to go home. Stephan, Josie and Kristen all should have been called back and it should have been Josie or Stephan to go home. I love this show, but I am seriously considering skipping it in the future after this episode.
Is this Top Chef or Top Drama? Can't understand why Josie is still on the show. With the exception of Kristen assuming full responsibility, I'm not sure why Ms J is still there.
We're not watching LCK to boost your stupid ratings. You don't deserve our viewership and NOTHING was hard about tonight's decision. Josie SUCKS, plain and simple, and she should've gone home...WEEKS AGO! You all messed up. YOU NEED TO MAKE A PUBLIC APOLOGY TO US AND TO KRISTEN.
