Dogs Competing at Westminster Get Five-Star Treatment at the Hotel Pennsylvania

Only the best for the best.

Here’s something you’ve probably never thought about. When dogs descend on New York to compete in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, where do they stay? Luxury hotels aren’t exactly set up to offer five-star service to canines — and that’s what the competitors deserve, given their pedigrees.

It turns out that around 600 of the 3,000 competitors are housed in the Hotel Pennsylvania, right across the street from Madison Square Garden, where the competition is held. There, a dog concierge named Jerry Grymek attends to their every desire.

Grymek isn’t merely on call to fetch kibble and take the dogs for walks. No, his services are far more sophisticated. In the past, he told The New York Times, he’s hired acupuncturists, psychics, and even an opera singer for his clients so that they can relax before the main event. And by clients, yes we mean his dog clients — all humans are in service of them! When they are hungry, Grymek fetches them food, including slices of pizza, chicken sandwiches, and McDonald’s hamburgers — without the onions, of course.

The Hotel Pennsylvania has been hosting Westminster dogs since the 1990s, and they know how to cater to the event. Along with throwing dog parties and dog fashion shows during the run of the show, the hotel has the largest canine spa in New York, which provides grooming stations, bathing tubs, exercise space, and an indoor relieving area.

They also know to stock up on cots before guests start to arrive — not for the dogs, but instead, for their coaches. The dogs usually sleep in the beds.

The best part about all of this is that if you stop by the Hotel Pennsylvania’s lobby in the next few days, you are likely to see at least a few dogs competing in the main event! And who says it’s hard to get close to fame?
