How Does Trump's Travel Spending Compare to Obama's?

Spoiler: They're way off scale.

Now that Barack Obama has left office, his dream vacations with Michelle — to Palm Springs, to Richard Branson's Necker Island, and to exotic South Pacific locations — are the stuff of legend. (Let's just say he broke the Internet when he kitesurfed like a boss.) But, needless to say, it's a far cry from the suit-clad lifestyle he led while leader of the free world.

During the eight years he was in office, CNN reports, Obama spent $97 million on travel-related costs. That figure comes according to a conservative-leaning watchdog group known as Judicial Watch, and includes both leisure and work-related travel, according to the CNN report.

Does that number sound like a lot? Consider it in comparison to President Donald Trump's travel expenses. According to Fortune, Trump is on pace to surpass that figure in just his first year. In his first 80 days in office, Trump's travels — namely to Mar-a-Lago, where he's already made six trips — have cost American taxpayers an estimated $20 million.

Separately, First Lady Melania Trump lives not in the White House but in a penthouse of Trump Tower in Manhattan. The city of New York spends as much as $146,000 daily to provide security daily, according to police estimates cited in the New York Times. That adds up to an additional $50 to $60 million each year the arrangement continues.
