If there’s one time when you’re allowed to really go overboard — truly splurge more than you’ve ever splurged before — it’s for your honeymoon. And who better to model that opulence after than Beyonce and Jay Z, or JT and Jessica Biel? When faced with an entire world’s worth of options for a dreamy post–“I do” destination, take a cue from the choices of some incredibly well-traveled stars. They might not all still be hitched, but they surely selected epic places to enjoy their sweetest moments of just-wedded bliss. Here, 12 resorts where you can honeymoon like an A-lister.
1. Singita Faru Faru Lodge, Tanzania
After super sexy couple Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel made it official, they opted for a wild, romantic African safari honeymoon. This exclusive, eco-conscious property set on a reserve in north Tanzania allowed them the opportunity to get close in a hot air balloon and spot animals like zebras and elephants from either a rugged four-by-four or the comfort of a gorgeous infinity pool. Emmy Rossum and her hubby Sam Esmail embarked on a safari, too, though they opted for Rwanda.
2. Laucala, Fiji
Not only is this the island home of maybe the world’s coolest pool — a clear glass cube filled with water seemingly floats atop another pool — it’s the place where you’ll feel like royalty when celebrating your love. Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel fled to this super private Fijian island after their intimate wedding, as did Suits’ Patrick J. Adams and Pretty Little Liars’ Troian Bellisario. Butler service is a given, as are the most picture-perfect beaches and water imaginable.
3. Four Seasons Bora Bora, French Polynesia
If it’s good enough for Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux — who are actually so generous they brought along friends for their honeymoon — and Josh Flagg and Bobby Boyd, then it’s good enough for us. This renowned resort is set on the amazingly aquamarine lagoon around Bora Bora, and offers its guests not just plush beach and overwater bungalows, but incredible food, a gorgeous spa and a range of experiences like jet skiing around the isle, and swimming with stingrays and black-tipped reef sharks. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban honeymooned a few minutes away by boat at the St. Regis Bora Bora in what was rumored to be a 13,000 square-foot, $15,000-per-night villa. Talk about epic.
4. La Sirenuse, Positano, Italy
No, an Italian honeymoon isn’t a novel concept, but there’s a reason it stays so popular: It’s absolutely breathtaking. And the food. When Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer sought a perfect honeymoon refuge they picked this Positano classic, the most secluded and romantic — not to mention luxurious — hotel with pristine views of the coastline. Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, after having a family honeymoon at Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn in Belize, also stayed. And Positano was also the destination for Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons and Todd Spiewak, Lauren Conrad and William Tell, and Allison Williams and Ricky Van Veen. Word to the wise: Go hungry (think truffles and pasta).
5. Sanctuary Resort & Spa, Scottsdale, Arizona
One might expect that Beyonce and Jay Z would have discovered a new island somewhere in the middle of the Pacific and had a villa built and staff flown in to treat them to the most rare, exotic and private honeymoon known to mankind. But actually they went to Arizona, to a part called Paradise Valley, where they still had stunning — if slightly less exotic — views, along with the option for tennis on pro-quality courts, culinary workshops and TLC at the award-winning spa.
6. Villa D’Este, Lake Como, Italy
We hear Lake Como and instantly think of George Clooney, but this over-the-top opulent 16th century residence turned tony hotel is actually where John Krasinski and Emily Blunt celebrated their newly married status. Actually, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend were married at the property stuffed with antiques and art, with velvet-trimmed suites, eight tennis courts, gorgeous gardens and, of course, that iconically beautiful lake, with an expansive floating pool resting atop it. Paradise found.
7. VEsperanza, An Auberge Resort, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Now–consciously uncoupled Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin spent their honeymoon at this favorite Los Cabos resort, but we don’t think it has anything to do with their split. LeAnn Rimes and hubby Eddie Cibrian, too, escaped here for their romantic getaway, which was — let’s be real — undoubtedly full of margaritas, sand, sun and snuggling.
8. COMO Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos
This Caribbean idyll, which survived fall’s hurricanes just fine, is where several couples that did not make it honeymooned — Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, and Eva Longoria and Tony Parker—but don’t let that stop you. It didn’t prevent the super hot pairing of Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello from hitting the beach in skimpy suits, posing seductively for couple selfies on the white sand and, hysterically, trying to catch crabs. Of course, in the restaurants you can get all the super fresh seafood you desire, no effort required.
9. Ballyfin, Ireland
For a little royal treatment after their over-the-top wedding spectacle — because clearly more was required — Kim Kardashian and Kanye West headed to Ireland for some “hiking.” It’s reported that they enjoyed the fresh, crisp Irish air from the gilded confines of a 20-room mansion known as Ballyfin, one of the world’s top properties. There they soaked in appropriately lavish art-filled surroundings, including 600 acres of gardens. Also possible here: a lake excursion during which a butler rows you around.
10. One&Only Reethi Ray, Maldives
With hundreds of private islands scattered about in the unbelievably crystalline Indian Ocean, the Maldives is maybe one of the most pristine settings for romance. And this resort knows romance—their extravagant guests frequently dream up outsized gestures for their loved ones. Fergie and Josh Duhamel, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade, and Tara Lipinski and Todd Kapostasy all honeymooned here, and had the option of booking private dinners on a secluded sandbank, having a couples’ spa day, swimming with sea turtles, or simply sunning on their ultra-private Grand Water Villa decks, with 24/7 butlers to tend to their every whim.
11. North Island Resort, Seychelles
Prince William and Kate Middleton, George and Amal Clooney, Salma Hayek and Francois Henri-Pinault…with names like this it’s clear this private-island resort is a bucket-list kind of place out of the reach of most. Still, a bride can dream. For their 10-day honeymoon, the Prince and Duchess reportedly spent $720,000, which included a private butler, unlimited Scuba diving, and spa visits. There are just 11 posh villas on the 519-acre island, so you know there are no peeping paparazzi around to watch you enjoy your bespoke meals (there are also no set menus) — except maybe the 160-year-old resident tortoise.
12. Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, California
When it comes to life-changing American retreats, Post Ranch Inn is at the top of every list. Its devotees include Drew Barrymore and Will Koppelman, who surely must have taken advantage of their infinity-edge hot tub for stargazing. It’s not popular only for honeymoons, evidenced by Andy Samberg and Joanna Newson’s wedding ceremony on the five-star property with jaw dropping views of the most beautiful part of California, drool-worthy cuisine, and cozy wood-burning fireplaces.
