For reasons that aren't exactly clear — was it a health issue? was it an unfortunate run-in with the paparazzi? — Meghan Markle's father was not ultimately present at the royal wedding. Since the royal snub, the duchess's dad has told his side of the story on Good Morning Britain. And wow, did he disclose a lot.
In a televised interview for the UK show, Thomas Markle shared that he was devastated — as was his daughter — that he was unable to attend her big day. Insted of being at the big event in person, Markle said that he watched the event on TV as he recovered from his heart surgery.
"She was beautiful. I cried a little watching her. I was very proud and I couldn't see a better moment in my life. The whole world was watching my daughter," he said. But, there was of course a downside: "The unfortunate thing now is that I'm a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history instead of a dad walking his daughter down the aisle," he said.
The 73-year-old also talked about those unfortunate paparazzi pics. (ICYMI: just before the royal wedding, news came out that he had conspired with photographers to stage photos of himself looking at photos of Meghan and Harry in an Internet cafe; the photos were subsequently sold to news outlets.)
"It was presented to me as a chance to change my image because for the last year photographs of me were always derogatory,’ he said ... "I didn’t do it for money, I did it to change my image. For one whole year I was presented as a hermit hiding in Mexico but obviously I made a mistake and it all went wrong."
Markle also dropped a few bombshells about the royal couple. First, he shared some alleged comments that Prince Harry made about politics. During an early phone conversation with his now son-in-law, Markle shared that he had brought up some issues he has with President Trump; the prince allegedly encouraged the royal dad to give POTUS a chance. He also allegedly shared that he was not entirely opposed to Brexit.
Another interesting tidbit: Markle was not shy about sharing his daughter's wish to become a mama. He even speculated — for all the world to hear — that Meghan would become pregnant soon.
Though he certainly seems to know intimate details of the couple's lives, Markle has yet to meet his new son-in-law. Still, Harry did ring him up when he decided to propose to Meghan, and asked her father for her hand. His reply, he said, was to tell Harry: "You are a gentleman, promise me you will never raise your hand against my daughter and of course I will grant you my permission."
Markle also added this sweet statement about his hopes for Meghan and Harry. "As long as they're happy and they have a great life and have some beautiful children and do good things in the world, I can't ask for more," he said.
