How Is Alex Tyree Related to John Legend? All About Their "Amazing" Connection
Alex Tyree admitted Chrissy Teigen and John Legend make him watch the show with them.
When Alex Tyree started belting out a song during the series premiere of Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard, other castmates were shocked to hear an amazing voice come out — until they learned he has a very famous singer for a cousin.
As the friends got to know each other a little better in the hot tub on the first night of Season 1 with a little game of truth or dare, Alex was dared to sing the group a song, and ended up making a big reveal about his personal life.
How are Alex Tyree and John Legend related?
The two are cousins.
“I have a lot of different singers and musicians in my family,” Alex said in his confessional, and went on to spill, “My cousin [is] a really popular singer.”
“Really popular” is quite an understatement. Although Alex never officially uttered his famous cousin’s name, Jasmine Ellis Cooper clued fans in during her confessional.
“His cousin? It’s John Legend,” Jasmine said. “Hello! Clearly, he is not ordinary people.”
Andy Cohen hosted Chrissy Teigen, John Legend’s wife, on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in May 2023, soon after the series premiere of Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard aired. Andy asked Teigen if she was surprised to have a family member on a Bravo show.
“It’s so cool because we love Alex. He’s there for Thanksgivings and everything, and now he’s part of the Bravoverse — it’s amazing!” Teigen, a self-professed Bravo superfan, said.
“How perfect for you!” Andy responded.
In fact, Alex himself said on a recent episode of WWHL that Legend and Teigen are watching Season 2.
"Every time I visit, they force me to watch it with them. The cringiest moments, I'm like I don't wanna," he laughed.
Legend, who is from Springfield, Ohio, and his cousin, both grew up in the Buckeye State, about an hour and a half apart. Alex was born in Cincinnati and graduated from Miami University in 2011.
Alex helped to found CultureCon, part of The Creative Collective NYC, that’s dedicated to creatives of color, according to his bio on Miami University’s alumni website. He even invited Legend for a “creative genius fireside chat” at the conference in October 2018, and admitted at that time they were cousins.
The two have a strong family bond. When Alex posted a photograph to Instagram in February 2024 of his grandmother holding his mother as a baby, along with his aunts, uncle, and grandfather, John Legend commented, “BEAUTIFUL,” on the photo.

Alex and his cousin have another thing in common: a love of music, singing, and performing. During a party in the Season 1 finale, Alex sang a song that he penned with his brother.
He wrote about the moment on his Instagram in June 2023.
“My 6-year-old self is probably smiling up at me right now,” Alex captioned the photo of himself singing. “A once aggressively shy kid, seeing the adult version of him be courageous & vulnerable enough to sing, to try, and be seen (in good, bad or misunderstood) for the world to see.”
