Brittany Hints at the Reason for Her Breakup with Jax: He's "Moody and Negative"

Brittany accused Jax of having "double standards" when she and the other women from The Valley headed for Malibu.

The marital strain between Brittany Cartwright and Jax Taylor is plain to see as the debut season of The Valley continues.

It’s no secret that the former Vanderpump Rules alums decided to call it quits after less than five years of marriage. While the announcement came after filming for The Valley concluded, audiences are getting a front-row seat to at least some of the tension leading up to their separation. (Don’t worry. Brittany confirmed that cameras picked back up after news of the split).

Here's what Brittany had to say about the state of her marriage in a clip from The Valley, Season 1, Episode 5.

Brittany Cartwright reveals why she fights with Jax

Brittany and Jax weren’t on the same wavelength as Brittany packed for a Malibu sleepover with the other women of The Valley.

“I love Jax, but I literally try to be positive and happy and Jax is, a lot of the times, moody and negative,” Brittany told producers. “A lot of the times, I feel like we balance each other out in that way, but other times, I’m like, ‘I gotta get out of here; I gotta go do something fun.’”

Brittany planned to head to Malibu with Nia Booko, Michelle Saniei Lally, Janet Caperna, Kristen Doute, and Jasmine Goode for a night in a $25,000-per-month rental. Overall, Jax wanted his wife to have a good time with her friends, telling her to “have fun” as she and Janet headed out the door.

Jax even sent Brittany a text while the women were en route:

“Don’t worry about us,” Brittany read aloud. “Get drunk, have fun, and be careful. We love ya.”

Brittany accused Jax of having “double standards,” claiming she had a day when she didn’t feel well and that Jax “kept making it worse" — flashback to nine days earlier when Jax barked that she “act like a mom,” especially if she wanted to bring a second child into the world.

Why did Jax and Brittany decide to break up?

In February 2024, the parents of one announced their separation on their shared podcast, When Reality Hits with Jax and Brittany, stating they were “taking time apart” and living in separate homes. More recently, Brittany confirmed on the April 2, 2024 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that she was “still separated” and “still living in an Airbnb.”

The former Hooters girl told Andy that  one fight, in particular, became “the final straw.”

“Yes, we just had a horrible fight, and it was like the veil was lifted, and I noticed everything wrong,” said Brittany. “You know, they always say [that] a woman can hit her breaking point, and then it’s hard to come back from that.”

Brittany previously told reporters that she felt Jax took her for granted after nine years together. However, on WWHL, Brittany said the aforementioned fight had something to do with her co-star on The Valley, Kristen Doute.

"Just he kind of woke up one morning [and] was mad that I went out with Kristen the night before and kind of like made up a story in his own head and started a fight over something that never happened,” she said.

It was worth mentioning that the long-time friends have recently been at odds.

Brittany and Jax maintain their 2-year-old son, Cruz Michael Cauchi, is at the top of their priorities. Despite the couple’s differences, Brittany cited the Jax’s Studio City owner as “an amazing father” in a recent interview with The Daily Dish. In another podcast episode, she said they were “still friends.”

Both agreed, “Cruz is what matters the most,” as evident in several outings with the estranged couple and their toddler, including Easter brunches, zoo visits, soccer practice, and more.

“We also are still friends; we’re still co-parenting,” Brittany previously stated. “We’re gonna be adulting as hell about this.”
