Why Carl Radke Was Forced to Break the Fourth Wall: "Don't Want to Have Any Secrets"

Plus, find out what advice Amanda gave Carl after being in a similar situation with not wanting to tell her parents that Kyle cheated on her.

By Allison Crist

Carl Radke's conversation with his mom, Sharon, and stepfather Lou about his relationship with Lindsay Hubbard came back to haunt him on Season 8, Episode 11 of Summer House (which aired May 2), as he was forced to decide between telling Lindsay about his parents' harsh words ahead of time or having her be blindsided by the chat when it eventually aired on the show.

How to Watch

Watch Summer House on Bravo Thursdays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock. Catch up on the Bravo app.

Suffice to say, things got real meta, real fast.

How did Carl Radke break the fourth wall on Summer House?

While struggling to determine if he was going to tell Lindsay about his conversation with his parents — more specifically, that Lou, an ordained minister, had said he wouldn't marry them because of the seriousness of their issues — Carl turned to Amanda Batula and Kyle Cooke for advice.

Mid-discussion, Amanda pointed out the obvious and broke the fourth wall herself, asking, "Isn't she gonna see this?"

Carl then followed suit, locking eyes with one camera as another zoomed out to reveal a producer and yet another cameraperson.

"It's not natural because of this," he said while motioning to the film crew, explaining that if it weren't for the show, "I would go have this conversation with my parents, I'd go back to Lindsay and be like, 'I love you, let's f-cking get married, I can't wait.'"

Attempting to sympathize with Carl's situation, Amanda made a confession about Kyle's past cheating.

"I probably never would've told my parents that Kyle cheated on me, and I ended up having to do it because they were gonna see it," she said. "It made me sick. But I'd rather it come from me than have to tell them right before it aired."

As such, she advised Carl to do the same thing she did.

"At the end of the day, Lindsay's gonna find out what was said," Amanda pointed out. "And it's better coming from you than later down the road."

Lindsay Hubbard's reaction to Carl's conversation with his parents

Carl ultimately took Amanda's advice and sat Lindsay down.

"I don't want to have any secrets from you," he began. "When the conversation from New Jersey with my parents plays on TV, so you're not blinded or caught off guard, I'm just wanting to make sure that you know what Lou told me. He said, 'As it stands where you guys are right now, if you were a couple I was working with, I would not marry you.'"

"I just want you to know that's what was said in New Jersey, but they both love you," Carl added. "It's not a question."

Lindsay was naturally shocked, but noted that she was "appreciative" of Carl for telling her the truth.

At the same time, she also said, "That's kind of a significant thing to say, is it not?"

Lindsay and Carl went back and forth from there, but the conversation was ultimately cut short. Tune in to Episode 12 to see the rest of their chat.
