Here's the Never-Before-Seen Conversation Captain Sandy Had with Hannah Before Lara's Exit
The Below Deck Med crew members discussed how best to move forward with the second stew.
If you've been watching this season of Below Deck Mediterranean, you know that we've already said goodbye to one crew member. Second stew Lara Flumiani decided to depart this season after working only one charter.
Things had not been going well between Lara and her chief stew, Hannah Ferrier, up to that point. There appeared to be tension between the stews right from the beginning as Hannah struggled to get Lara to follow her direction, and Lara disagreed with Hannah's management style.
Their conflict came to a head when Hannah and Lara had a one-on-one meeting following the first charter of the season. When it seemed like she wasn't making any progress with Lara, Hannah pulled Captain Sandy Yawn in to help sort out their issues. At the encouragement of Captain Sandy, Hannah and Lara ultimately apologized to one another and agreed to start fresh as they headed into the second charter of the season.
But what we didn't see in this episode, which originally aired on June 15, was that Hannah and Captain Sandy actually had a little chat of their own following this discussion with Lara. We got to see this previously unaired footage in a special "Never Before Scene" episode of Below Deck Med Season 5, Episode 3, which aired on June 22.
During the moment, which you can view above, Captain Sandy gives Hannah some more advice on how to best manage Lara moving forward. "Hannah, you're a leader. That's where you have to suck it up," Captain Sandy told the chief stew. "You have to shift a little to change her because right now she's been so insubordinate to you and so f--k you. It's obvious."
Captain Sandy added, "It's hard, I get it."
She then suggested that Hannah take Lara aside and speak with her to determine how they can have a successful working relationship for the rest of the charter season. "What you need to do is right now you're both jacked up on that energy, just go outside, relax," Captain Sandy said. "Say, 'Hey, we need to figure this out.'"
Hannah agreed and said that she will walk away before things escalate with Lara again. Captain Sandy ended their talk by encouraging Hannah to just see how the next charter with Lara goes.
Unfortunately, there would not be a second charter with Lara. The second stew told Captain Sandy that she would be leaving the season right before the guests for the second charter were to arrive on The Wellington.
Captain Sandy would later call in Season 2 crew member Christine "Bugsy" Drake to join The Wellington crew as its new second stew. Even though Hannah and Bugsy haven't always gotten along in the past, they seem to be doing just fine working together so far this season. We'll have to keep watching Below Deck Med to see if it stays that way.
