Nearly a year after becoming a mother, the Below Deck alum has experienced many shifts in her mindset and overall lifestyle. Kate demonstrated this, once again, when she took to Instagram to provide another inside look at the Florida “bungalow” she shares with her 11-month-old son, Sullivan Cay.

The video captured the adorable little boy sitting in the living room surrounded by dozens of toys — a scene Kate never expected for her home.

“Me: when I have kids I’m not going to let their toys run my house,” she wrote in the April 11 Instagram Story. “Also me: bubble machine in living room.”

Kate Chastain shares her expectations for motherhood

Months before welcoming Sullivan Cay, the former chief stew confirmed she was not in a relationship and would raise her baby as a single mom.

“Um, I’m doing it solo and perhaps with some help,” she said in the December 13, 2022, episode of the Watch What Happens Live After Show. “But I’m happy to do it alone.”

During her Clubhouse appearance, Kate told WWHL host Andy Cohen that her pregnancy had been “very easy,” perhaps “the easiest pregnancy ever.” She also expressed confidence in her ability to handle mommy duties, as she’s had much experience juggling tasks and catering to others in hectic situations.

“I think being a chief stew really trained me for it,” she said, to which Andy replied: “I do too.”

Kate Chastain says being a parent was harder than she thought

Well, months after giving birth to Sullivan Cay, Kate admitted that motherhood wasn’t as easy as she expected. She spoke about her experience during an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying she was learning a lot in her new chapter but loved every minute of it.

“You have to teach them literally everything,” she said during the August 2023 sitdown. “I didn’t know about ‘tummy time,’ You have to teach them to just lay on their tummy! Everything has to be taught. I thought they would kind of get it themselves.”

Kate continued: “It is so much different than I expected, so much more difficult, so I think that was healthy for me. I love a challenge. But a lot of moms would DM me on social media over the years and be like, ‘I’m the chief stew in my house! I’m chief stew at my home! I’ve got three kids, I cook dinner, I’ve got to do their laundry and all their rooms and, you know, picnics...’ I said, yeah, I guess it’s kind of similar. Good for you, but now I’m like, I wish I could tell all of those moms you had it so much harder!”
